Trying Windows 8.1 on virtual machine software. Let's see of it is worth it.
It won't be. Windows 8 is horrible, and Microsoft for some reason became so lazy as to use the XBox360 interface for a few things on it. And, it's just a terrible OS.
Win 8.1 is not worth it. Windows 10 might be.
I would be surprised. Compatibility has been pretty much the only thing that's made Windows worth it. Hopefully more companies will start developing for Linux, and Linux compatibility will get better.
Or at least get to the point where it's not hit-and-miss with what I want to use on it.:D

I have a box with Windows 10 pre-beta loaded and it's better than 8.1 but not as good as 7 from a UI perspective.

I like Linux a lot better and hope what you hope.

I hope Microsoft gets called out over their whole certificate scam thingy that requires companies to pay to have default Windows compatibility (without having to boot in test mode) with USB devices. It actually kinda surprised me when I found out I could use my XBox controller on Linux without downloading the driver software for it and without having to set anything, and there that Linux lacks the compatibility issue that Windows does when using older software on a newer system. Action Replay (and probably Dex Drive, but I've not seen a serial port on a computer in a long time) works on Linux, Sacred works on Linux, and other games that Windows wont run for various reasons have been about a 50/50 on Linux.

Cloud Gaming changes everything or may change everything. An example of a successful Cloud Gaming provider is Onlive. Onlive was hosting games in the cloud until recently when it was purchased by Sony.

Graphic card companies such as Nvidia are producing graphics accelerator cards aimed at servers to facilitate cloud-based games. This means suscribers can play intense games on very simple computers such as chromebooks by logging into the server of a provider. The client computer does not need to have a lot of video processing power and can run cool.

There are also game development systems which are geared towards producing cloud based games.

I've never had internet fast enough or stable enough to think that is a good idea. Maybe once us country folk have access to high-speed internet, without the severe restrictions imposed by satellite internet, it will be more of a viable option, but for now any high-end game over a cloud server would be just as laggy as playing most games over dial-up.

I have no sympathy for you at all! My computer won't play fast video games, so I need cloud gaming to work!

Only to a point. Diablo 3 and Sacred 2 do not get along with my computer. Fable 3 and Borderlands 2 works just fine, but it took me forever to get Skyrim working on it.

My computer plays solitaire very well!
I wonder if Windows will ever quit putting solitaire on their computers?
I can still remember when they used to put this skiing game where you had to dodge obstacles and outrun a yeti that would eat you.
