Yes, it took a few years before Schulz really started to shape and develop the characters. It's interesting to look at the strips from the 50s and compare them with later decades.
That was the same strip that appeared 71 years ago today, the very first one. Shermy and Patty are in it, although they were eventually relegated to minor characters who would hardly appear.
