Wowza. Here, you just don't wear the hijab if you want to wear miniskirts and tanktops. Plenty of Muslim women don't wear the hijab. If you're going to wear the hijab, then you must, at the very least, have sleeves to your wrists and your ankles covered. Of course, plenty get heaps of make-up, wear high-heels, and basically everything else they can get away with.
Yeah, well when you have a mixture of moderate to secular Muslims on one hand (which is growing, it seems), and then Canadian Muslims who grew up in quite strong, fundamentalist homes and were practically made to wear hijab even in elementary school, they just become accustomed to it.
I still assert that hijab is more cultural than Qur'anic, but I'm just plain biased, especially when it *can* be soo fashionable sometimes! I've seen really pretty ones on the bus with Spring patterns and the like on the bus and Skytrain.
