Donald Trump is done unless there's some miracle in the works.
The republican party has a problem though, Trumps base is their base and it has a high concentration of racism comparativily. What this means is that the voters are not going to abandon him. Donald Trump will keep the racists and the fiscal conservatives. The swing voters however are going to abandon Trump and the republican party in groves and they will lose seats and presidential elections for years to come if they can't abandon the racism.
The world does not have a problem with fiscal conservatism but because it minimizes Government subsidizes to everyone particularly minorities, racists are attracted to it. The Republicans need to come out and take a hard stand against racism because of how fiscal conservatism can be made to look racist. If they don't they will lose the swing voters. If they do make a stand they will lose some of the racists. The prospect does not look good either way.
Is there a way for the Republican party to come out of this as a valid contender to the Democratic party for future elections or is America going to be a one party system for a while?
The republican party has always been the 'party of the rich'. That is, it has always basically served the interests of the wealthy elite. But as this wealthy elite has shrunk in numbers, so dramatically in the last 40-50 years, the party could no longer win elections on their votes, alone. So they had to find ways to cultivate the votes of non-wealthy citizens, even though those citizens would be voting for a party that had no intention of serving their interests.
Karl Rove found the solution during G.W. Bush's run for governor of Texas. Bush was not the popular candidate, and was not likely to win the election. So Karl Rove had his minions put inflammatory flyers on the cars in fundamentalist evangelical church parking lots all across Texas, on Sundays while their owners were in church, falsely claiming that Bush's opponent, Anne Richards, was a homosexual. And it worked like magic! Those Christians ran to the polls in droves on election day to vote for G.W. Bush, as a vote AGAINST the supposed homosexual sinner, Anne Richards. And Bush won the election.
Later, when Bush ran against McCain in the republican presidential primary, Karl Rove used the same trick, again. Only this time he had his minions distribute flyers all across the southern states claiming that John McCain had fathered illegitimate mixed-race babies with black women while his wife lay terminally ill, in the hospital. And so voters all across the south ran to the polls to vote for George Bush, as a vote AGAINST that "nig-loving, adulteror", John McCain.
And then when Bush ran against John Kerry in the general election, Karl Rove had his minions spread the lie, nation-wide, that John Kerry was a phony war hero. That his medals were based on a phony story he and others told about his heroic actions in Vietnam. And again, the ignorant nationalists ran to the polls to vote for Bush, as a way of voting AGAINST the "phony war hero", John Kerry.
And of course we all remember the "Kenyan-Muslim" lies about Barrack Obama. And the endless accusations of all sorts against Hillary Clinton.
For at least 35-40 years, now, the republican party has been deliberately telling lies to stir up anger and hatred among the especially ignorant and prejudiced American voters, so as to aim it at their political opponents, to win elections. And it's worked well for them. Meanwhile, tabloid mogul Rupert Murdock, and radio talk jock Rush Limbaugh discovered that they could develop and hold a large media audience doing much the same thing. That is telling sensational lies about democrats and liberals and black and whomever, that pander to American bias and prejudice and paranoia, to keep people watching and listening to their ad-feed (for profit). And that has worked very well for them, too.
Because sadly, when these unscrupulous people cater to our bias, and our prejudice, and our fear of each other, we respond just as they'd hoped we would. And the result is that we are now in an ongoing state of hyper anxiety and loathing for each other. And as bad as it's gotten, I see little evidence to suggest that this will stop anytime soon. Because it's not going to stop so long as we keep falling for the lies. And for some reason we like hating on each other even more than we are willing to hate the lies and the promoters of all this hatred. Even when they're using it to destroy us, for their own gain.
