"The Royals Are Spiraling About Prince Harry's Upcoming Memoir"

With only what we know on this of the pond, I have developed a real dislike for Camilla.
Interested in what others may offer in her defense.

Prince William Plans To "Stay Neutral" If Prince Harry Comes For Duchess Camilla In His Memoir (msn.com)
Yes, the British Royal Family does seem to be largely a soap opera for Americans.:D I recall from my time in Houston the questions I used to get, none of which I could answer.

I have no opinion on the Duchess of Cornwall, by the way. She seems to keep a low profile, which is at least one good thing about her, as far as it goes.

Downton Abbey is a much better show.
(The characters are more sympathetic.)

I never could understand my fellow Americans' fascination with the Royal Family. I guess it appeals to those who still like fairy tales.

It'd be different if they actually went on quests, like King Arthur and the like. Why don't they have them go out and fight fire-breathing dragons or something? Or they could search for the Holy Grail, as an example for the people in these dark times?

Absolutely, and I think Diana was extremely popular with the American media. Add to that the movie 'The Queen' placed Philip and Charles as characters rather unpopular.

It's like Downton Abbey....but without
such clever writing & wonderful score.

Never got into that show either. I do recall the TV sitcom Night Court, where there was a defense attorney who was really obsessed with the Royal Family. She also was a big fan of Barry Manilow.

Trouble with monarchism is that it's a form of government decided by accident of birth. You never know who you're going to get. After Americans' experience with George III, we didn't want any more kings.

I remember that series. I don't think you can top British humor. PBS had several series that were fun, 'Are You Being Served', 'Vicious', and many others.

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.

It looks fanciful, glamourous and entertaining and they don't have to live with actual monarchs in your country.

For similar reasons you have many Westerners fawning over Putin et al. whereas most Russians would rather prefer to avoid the subject entirely.

Well, that's just it. They like fairy tales. Also, too many Americans are fixated by celebrity worship.

I just decided to rewatch an old favorite of mine, "Nicholas and Alexandra." I wonder if Putin will bring back the monarchy in Russia. That would make him Vladimir III, if I'm not mistaken. Vladimir I (958-1015) was given sainthood for bringing Christianity to Russia.

Nearly all Brits do admire our Queen, but after her time the monarchy could be on thin ice.
Charles could lose the lot, William could save some of it. But Charles seems to be more interested in Charles than the future of the Monarchy.

But Diana, besides being princess, actually did things to make the world a better place. She was extremely endearing.

Charles isn't charismatic, so I wonder what will happen when he is king.

What? Ol' Vlad is just a regular, exceptionally good looking guy who got into power by the overwhelming approval of his people, and has only stayed there because he's just that good at improving the lives of the Russian people, minus foreign agents and Caucasian terrorists of course!

That is, I imagine, the primary reason why you see so few modern tyrants transferring their rule into official monarchies: It fundamentally undermines their own public image as being in power due to popular approval.

In pre-industrial times, people believed in a divine right of kings, which is why I believe that back then, it was politically opportune even for a jumped-up military dictator to assume the mantle of kingship.
Whereas in our modern times, people believe in the inherent legitimacy of popular support, which I would say is a major factor why the same people who would be Emperor Napoleon or the Prince of Orange in earlier times call themselves President and Prime Minister these days, and hold sham elections in an attempt to cater to that modern sensibility.
