I was watching a few episodes of a marathon, of a TV program, about, The Search for Atlantis. There was an Archeologist and Geologist and they travel around the ancient world, to exam possible sites, trying to find clues. The first episode I saw was very fascinating since they were looking in Croatia, which is just east of Italy and on the other side of the Adriatic Sea.
Some of the finds, that local teams shared, with them, were rewriting the history of the ancient world. For example, they found some small fired clay animal figures and other such specimens dated back to 5000-6000 years BC, based on carbon dating. These quality specimen were about 2000 years older than was thought possible at that time. That region, is although relatively unexplored for artifacts, now has some of the oldest finds connected to civilizations, being way ahead of their time. It was also an area, where the oceans were much lower 5-6K years ago, with the digs under water. The rise of the ocean was connected to ancient climates change and glaciers melting and the seas rising.
The Greek Philosopher Plato writes about Atlantis and describes, based on stories, a group of island connected by earthen bridges. They have found one 100 meter earthen bridge; gravel walkway, that is under water. Also near by they were shown the fourth largest sink hole big enough to swallow a city. This was carved out by underwater passages erode as the oceans rose, until the sinkholes collapsed. When the sea was lower all the islands were a lot closer and spread out as the water level rose.
The second episode I saw they went to Sicily, which was another possible site. There they have an active volcano Mt Aetna, which is 10,000 ft tall. The local expert brought them on a tour and explain how there had been a major eruption, 8000 years ago, where the side in the mountain disappeared in a series of landslides. The amount of mass displace was about 5-10 times that of Mt Saint Helens. The landslide went into the Mediterranean Sea and based on their calculations would have caused a displacement tidal wave over 150 feet tall. Anything along the eastern Mediterranean Sea coast would have been flooded and destroyed. The main ancient civilizations would appear later.
