The Teen Obesity Problem in America."

What's the point of this thread? To shame people? Seems so, since you have an insult as your thread title. You think people with a certain body type aren't shamed and bullied enough? This is just rude. Grow up.
I agree that the title might have been better, although it wasn't done out of malice but rather a recognition that teens are letting themselves become fat. In any case, because you find it personally insulting I've ask that the mods change it to "The teen obesity problem in America."

THANKS MODS.

Because some people have taken the title of my thread as a personal insult

"Fatty" is an insult, period.

I don't think it's the accepting culture that's the heart of the problem. It's a sedentary culture with poor food awareness and big appetites. We have too much food, being served in too big quantities, that is too easy to get, and a whole entertainment industry build around sitting down.

Perhaps our metabolisms are changing as a species?

I worked with a guy, super skinny, who no matter what or how much he ate, couldn't put on weight. No one questions that that is a problem with his metabolism. But fat people? Obviously they're just lazy.... /sarcasm

The best way to solve such issues would be with a reform in how education works, at both school and home.

Perhaps you are correct about the human metabolism.
I am also a skinny person who can't gain any weight, funny enough.

If you can read this, you are as lucky as I am.
The other day I happened to get stuck in traffic when one of the local high schools was getting out for the day. Sitting there waiting for the kids to cross the intersection I couldn't help but be struck by how many of them were conspicuously overweight.

When I was in high school obesity was very uncommon. Very few of the students were considered fat, or even overweight. Most of us were pretty fit, and even if we weren't at least we didn't look unfit.

But today being overweight and even obese seems closer to the norm.

This is borne out by the stats on teen age obesity I came across.

Being overweight is neither healthy nor attractive. So what's going on with teenagers these days?

.

Well, I teach American teens, and I don't notice weight. . . I will say that they come in all shapes and sizes.

My school is a title 1 urban school (greater Houston). Being "outside" is often not safe, so their activities are often more sedentary.

Food deserts are a real thing. Buying fresh fruits and vegetables is a costly, time consuming ordeal that others may take for granted.

Many of my students are also completely responsible for their own meals, as their parents work 60+ hours a week to pay rent. They don't learn to cook properly.

I know poverty is not a direct cause of obesity, but there is a correlation. Like most things, the soution is complicated. . . And they easy answer of "they're all lazy" may have a kernel of truth, but it's not a complete answer.

Yes! Yes! Yes! We know you're insulted. And because of it I've asked the mods to change it. *Sheesh!*

God, this forum is getting suckier by the second.

"Fatty" is not allowed anymore? That's almost as big of a joke as a fat person ordering fish and fries as a means to go the "healthy" route.

I see nothing wrong with it, I think we are becoming an age of whimps.

Unfortunately, the logical consequence of this is that the attractive, intelligent and desirable have to compromise themselves because of the ugly, the stupid and the mediocre. Not to mention people who are just flat out freaks.

They're eating & eating empty calories, trying to find the nutrition that's absent from their food.

I have a hard time sympathizing with them.
They ate their way into a very bad health problem.
Only 5% of those that loose significant weight will keep it off for one
year.
Saw one bimbo who weighed over 800 pounds.
She had to loose at least 600 pounds.
I doubt she made it.

There aren't many people who want to be overweight. There are likely some, and among those who say they do are likely to be found some liars. While I don't advocate "going easy" on people who have problems they can solve for themselves, I would honestly caution open-season bashing and/or shaming. Regardless how unfit you think they are, and how easily you can "take 'em", you're bound to come across one or two mentally unstable but clever examples who may just come after you if you hound them badly enough. In all reality, you never truly know "who you are messing with".

In the same spirit, I wouldn't "go easy" on anyone who made fun of someone and ended up shot for it. That too would be a "problem they could have solved for themselves." - by not being a butthole.

Don't expect that to last forever. As a 14 y/o I was 6'3' and 140#. I ate like a horse. Things were very different by the time I was 30, now I am nearly 60 and I have to be careful. I totally avoid junk, whereas when I was 22 I considered potato chips an important calorie supplement.

Wow. Really? I mean really? You're going that route with this? I didn't say you could share this.
Why bother with this one? They're acting like a sociopath and/or a pathological narcissist. They don't care about other people. Just ignore them and report if need be.

Himmler called. He wants to know if you're done borrowing his "social hygiene" laws.

One way to think of it is as a symptom of a mental disorder.
(I was associated with research program back when I was in engine (engineering) school.
I got to know the researchers & subjects.)
Many people just aren't equipped to deal with what is often a complex of difficulties, & professional help is necessary.
I thank my lucky stars that life is so relatively easy for me.

Btw, I'm not sympathetic either, but that's due to my own deficiency....yet another mental disorder.
