The Westernization of Iraq

I thought Michael Faraday invented the electric generator.

Thomas Edison invented workable mass electric generation... A whole other ball game, 100 times more complex.

...But hey, at least there's a way @Amanaki and @Komori can get power without being a hypocrite. But then, if they hate Western culture as a whole, then they can't even do that. So...

As you type on your computer.

America was founded by Westerners, and is Western through and through. So if you hate America, then you hate the West.

Also an entirely different point from the invention of the electric generator. One that required that the electric generator exist in order to carry out.

It would also be an example of how European ideas, inventions and culture have shaped this country. I see the proliferation and growth of some very positive ideas from European countries that are being espoused in this one. Cultural exchange can be bad or good. And can drive innovation and growth or lead to the obscurity of the native culture. But these things move back and forth and the old culture can resurface in various ways.

Here in the US we have been rocked by the proliferation of outdated 19th Century US cultural ideas. The sort of contamination that some fear can take place even within the dominant culture from the past of that culture.

The "Summer Festival" in Baghdad is the first celebration of its kind in the city

"I love this type of music," said Layan, a 19-year-old woman in a leather black top and full makeup.

"I hear a lot of people say that we're influenced by the West. Fine, there's no difference to me -- the important thing is I don't have to listen to this music at home in secret anymore," she said, pumping her fist into the air.

Just a few years ago, the sound of staccato gunfire or the echo of car bombs was more common in Baghdad than the resounding bass of electronic music.

Beats replace bombs: young Iraqis revel at summer festival

...So much for ISIS.

Good for them!

I'm not the one saying electronic music and motorcycles are evil, because "America".
Electronic dance music, house music and the like are inherently evil. It's true. No getting around it. Only good old Rock and Roll is going to save the World. Ask Dio and Dee Snider. Well, Dee anyway.

It is sad to see that the West (USA) made Iraq into a western country with the filth from Western culture instead of the local culture. why must West force other part of the world to be "more like Us" ???

IMO, it's more likely a case of tasting freedom and deciding it's much better than living under a theocratic dictatorship.

Yup, I agree. Note how the title of the thread says "Westernization".

Ronnie James Dio, rest in peace. My favorite vocalist period.

Trump is a fool. He's never read an oil concession agreement ..We aren't thieves. The oil business HATES a war zone.
It is hard to claim that a royal family with a net worth of $1.5 trillion, largely from oil, is being robbed. Now what they are doing with their own people is another issue.

Who are you talking about? 84% of all oil revenue in Saudi Arabia is invested in healthcare, education, housing, clean water, power generation and infrastructure development.

The Saudi Royal family has an estimated net worth of 1.5 trillion dollars, so it is difficult to claim that they are the victims of robbery. That was my point. That and I do not know how much gets to the average Saudi citizen. If you are saying they get a lot, then their leaders are doing better for them, than ours are.

I have some British blood. I hope I'm not contaminated.

...I'm Old English, more Irish than the Irish. ;)
