After several listens through. I have decided I don't like the vocals at all.

After several listens through. I have decided I don't like the vocals at all.

8 times through now. The drumming is outstanding as usual... the bass playing well below an easily audible pitch (pretty usual since Lateralus) the guitaring is heading in a far too thrash metally direction, but hopefully he can redeem himself ( my 3rd fav guitarist ) I've never really liked the lyrics... apart from Third Eye and Lateralus. I like his voice usually, but not on tracks like Sober and Swamp Song... this song reminds of both of these combined in one and to top it all off...after 16 years in the same band he still hasn't learned when to shut up and let the other guys play!!! A great lead vocalist should ALWAYS know this. Robert Plant, Jon Anderson, Dylan, Cat Stevens, Eddie Vedder... I could go on forever.

My point is, great voice, he's worked hard at it and can definitely sing... lyrically not my favourite, but again that's personal taste. But please please please please please... when your band has such great instrumentalists, give them some room to move without droning over the top of them all the time and distracting from the marvellous melodic intricacies and staccato rhythms!

Great review Chris. I have listened to it probably 6 times now including once on the radio today. I will play it at home again tonight and listen for some of the more hidden nuances. That's another great thing about Tool songs.....you hear more sounds the longer you listen. I REALLY like the bass in a couple of spots. My ear tends to hear rhythm over everything else anyway.

I'm hoping the vocals grow on me. I am not liking them at all.

What do you think of that alarm clock sound?

Yeah, I don't think APC has helped the situation... that's much more lyrically oriented music.

Just had another listen through LOUD. Haven't been able to do that yet. And I LOVE my music loud.

I think you're right about the electronic beat pads in a couple of spots. And I've figured out what it is exactly that I don't like about the vocals.....he sounds so raspy. yeah the lyrics just sound similar to the stinkfist ones but they're a bit more specific rather than leaving it open to interpretation.... one of his only redeeming features lyrically... ffs this is shaping up to be the worst tool album ever... here's hoping the other 10 tracks are a damn sight better!

I'm considering investing in some audio software that'll let me strip the vocal tracks from the CD...

Wow! Is there such a thing? That would be awesome. I was thinking earlier (before I read that post above) that I might like Vicarious better if Maynard wasn't singing! Plus there's tons of rap stuff that I would like if they weren't singing all that crap! I would probably consider buying that software too.
