Yes, they're my favorite band. My favorite album by theirs is My Arms, Your Hearse, but I think all of them are masterpieces.
I started out with a Yamaha Pacifica (about 200 euros) and bought a Jackson Warrior WRMG later (about 800 euros), I still love the Pacifica though, one of the best cheap guitars there are.
My amp is a measily 15 watt line 6 spider II but since I usually record stuff with my PC (excellent virtual amps) and don't play live I have no need for a better one.

I could use some help on tapping, but I think it might be because my amp isn't strong enough. I can do a little bit of sweeping and have a good alternate picking technique and legato style but I'm not very good on pinched harmonics and palm muting.

If you want a good tapping sound you should try boosting your distortion. Also make sure your tapping with the tip of your finger.
Sweeping is something I'm still working on. I was introduced to sweeping a couple of years ago.
Pinched harmonics are a little bit tricky, but there easy once you ge the hang of 'em. When you hit your string with your pic, immeadiatly have the tip of your thumb follow through and hit the string.
Palm muting is cake. Just have the edge of your palm rest toward the bottom part of the strings while you play and when you strum, make sure you do it with your wrist
