The Woke Thread

I watched those Netflix specials that enraged the woke cult and they were actually hilarious for the most part. He wasn't hateful.
I didn't think the one he had that enraged them before that one was bad. He even kicked Rachel whatshername under the bus for treading into "trans territory" (or however he described it) with her "transracial" thing, called her out for not even changing her name, and then gave a "very male" point of view on how he's convinced (transwomen at least, he didn't mention transmen) are legit. And then he told a story about a guy in a dress, and by the behaviors stated, yeah, he was a guy in a dress (especially with his dick hanging out). I don't want associated with those types, but the wokies shield them and insist they are a part of our community. If someone acts like a creepy, pervy guy, I don't care what he calls himself. Grab your tits in public and announce you like having them and just want to squeeze them, and believe women go around groping each other and feeling each other up, II do not care regardless of whatever, you are a man.
We shouldn't have to tolerate such bull**** or even be expected to acknowledge such a person as trans or a woman. Or like those guys posting upskirt "new dick" pics of themselves on reddit. Why must we claim these people are trans when they give people who already hate us such easy evidence in such a short reach reasons to keep us out of the restrooms we should be in?

Those types have taken over trans organizations and support groups, too. They are loud and aggressive, like men are, and push others out. They are bullies. I've seen this happen. Many of them are perverts and creepy just to be around. It's common for them for be chasers, obsessed with porn, who want to bang trans women. Look at how Jenner, who is an obvious transvestite, has positioned himself as the leader of the trans community to all the media.

It used to be, decades ago, that a distinction was made between transsexuals and transvestites, and the two groups did not mix socially or otherwise (look at Virginia Prince, a rather nasty and loud transvestite from decades ago, and he made it clear that he was a "transgenderist" who loved his male bits and was no "transsexual"). Now we're all thrown together. This might have started in the '90s, and became truly noticeable by the 2000s.

(There's an FTM equivalent of the "men in dresses", too, I've noticed. We have our own problem with young girls and women claiming to be FTMs, "trans masc", non-binary or whatever, when they're just confused women.)

I blame a lot of this on the collapse of standards of care and doctors and therapists not doing their jobs.

When we communicate we utilise shorthands to make things easier. Communication requires us to make compromises between accuracy and convenience. The term "woke" is no different in this regard.

Despite the fact we all do this all the time, people also like to selectively find fault with it on certain issues when done by "the other side".

Automatically deciding that those who do so on particular issues are doing so because they are juvenile bigots does little to advance a reasonable argument either.

Better to try to understand meaning from context than assume bad faith.
I might buy this if I had been in a comma the last few years and had not witnessed for myself how this term is used to denigrate anyone who is not sufficiently racist, homophobic or transphobic.

And as I indicated earlier other terms have been used in the same way in the past. This is just the latest version of what has been going on for decades, perhaps longer.

(at one time the word would have been something like n***** lover)

Who in this thread is denigrating anyone for not being "sufficiently racist, homophobic or transphobic"?

Who in this thread is doing anything that remotely resembles this?

You really can't tell the difference between people using the term as a convenient shorthand for a political phenomenon and those using it as a euphemism for "****** lover"?

In the news....
What Woke's Worth and Why - Washington Free Beacon
Excerpted...
In early 2019, Ta-Nehisi Coates delivered the inaugural "Distinguished Diversity Lecture" at the Ohio State University. Coates’s hourlong engagement, which included a reading, a moderated conversation, and an audience Q&A, cost OSU $41,500.

The price tag included first-class airfare, a per diem, and private transportation, a contract obtained by the Washington Free Beacon shows. OSU also sold Coates’s books, put him up at a four-star hotel that, per his contract, included "an indoor pool whenever possible" and provided a green room with two bottles of water and one box of Nature Valley "Crunchy Oats and Dark Chocolate" granola. The contract prohibits any fruit with pits.

Coates is a MacArthur "genius" and bestselling author, but even accomplished writers typically don’t rake in speaking fees nearly equivalent to the median household income of the city they are visiting. That sort of payment, however, is the industry standard for the rock stars of the new "wokeness," a survey of nearly 20 contracts obtained through public records requests shows.

Repetition is the source of learning?

Yields a falsehood when followed by itself yields a falsehood when followed by itself.

wokies say it's racist for someone to not date outside their race/ethnicity,

Also that having a preference for someone from outwith their ethnicity is racist as it is "fetishising" them.

Whatever people do, you can find a narrative to make it wrong.

Reminds me of this, when BBC "head of diversity" criticised a show for not stereotyping the black lead character enough:

Idris Elba’s portrayal of the gruff and dogged detective, John Luther, across five series of the hit BBC One drama earned him a series of best actor awards, including a Golden Globe.

Wayland, who was appointed to her role last year, cited the crime drama as an example of a series that is only superficially diverse.

“When it first came out everybody loved the fact that Idris Elba was in there – a really strong, Black character lead,” she said at the MITPV conference, according to The Times.

“We all fell in love with him. Who didn’t, right? But after you got into about the second series you got kind of like, OK, he doesn’t have any Black friends, he doesn’t eat any Caribbean food, this doesn’t feel authentic.”

She added that casting more Black actors is only part of the answer. “It’s about making sure that everything around them – their environment, their culture, the set – is absolutely reflective,” she said.

So you can tell the difference? Not so hard, is it? ;)

In which case, why not just work out meaning from context rather than pretending that because some people use it in bad faith, then the term can only ever be used in bad faith?

Very definitely. The whole post, but that mostly and especially because had we still the screenings and standards to filter out the pervy men the rest doesn't happen like it is. And Jenner? Ugh, blugh, and can we please give giving the media whore attention? She's done nothing for trans people, and she's done nothing to think she can govern a state. The Watchowski sisters are better for the role. They tried to work a trans character into a movie before they came out.

Yeah, and Lana looked set to transition since the '90s. Everyone was talking about it, even 20 years ago. It wasn't some out of the blue thing like Jenner.

I'm so annoyed with them capitalizing "Black" but not "white". That's actually a tactic that has been used by white supremacists online for decades, but in reverse. I guess it's okay when the liberal establishment does it, though.

A fair few "antiracists" do seem to share things in common with the more traditional racists.

I....have no idea if I’m “woke” or not. The term seems rather flexible, even for an English word. Maybe that’s because both sides of the American political landscape use it (but with seemingly very different definitions.) And American politics in general seems very hyperbolic to my eyes. No offence Americans
I am for social justice and regular justice. I think the term might have once been useful but has been overly politicised.
I don’t like “woke scolds”. But I have come to conclusion that sometimes I might need a scolding since I’m still learning. Annoying as it is.
Also I originally thought your link said “free bacon” and was greatly disappointed to see that it was actually free beacon lol

Are you serious? Do you expect me to believe you or anyone else are not using this term in a sarcastic mocking way? I am beyond sceptical. The whole point of that word is to mock the idea of equal justice.

Grammar...schmammar....language evolves.
It's now a cromulent term.
I know. But it's a shorter explanation than to lay down how "woke" is an extremely partisan term and one has to ditch a lot of reason and common sense to be "woke".
