Thoughts on the "No atheists in foxholes" argument

ecco

Veteran Member
The universe breathes billions of years ago
You are breathing for several years and will soon disappear
The universe remains smarter than human in survival techniques
But in the eyes of the unaware and the non intellectual, man remains smarter in understanding that there is no creator of the universe from which he will soon disappear.

The atheist insists that the universe is out of nothing, The atheist is believed to be an understanding creature that came from an incomprehensible way out
Atheist interpretations challenge his experience of billions of years of intelligence, and in interpretation as if inevitable
I'm glad you recognize the age of the universe. As to the rest, it's too convoluted to respond to.

You feel the same way toward Allah and Atlas and Shiva as I do. I just take it one step further and also reject the nonsense god you believe in.

The Bible indicates it's OK to beat slaves.
The Bible indicates it's OK to rape captured young virgins.

I don't believe in your made-up god and I don't believe in the madeup god of the Muslims or of the Greeks or of the Hindus.

But, hey. If it makes you happy to believe that everyone believes in non-entities, go for it.

Way back in my youth, I was convinced that no truly intelligent person could believe in something as silly as a god. I changed my mind when I realized the power of religious indoctrination on very young children.

There was a kid who hanged himself over climate
change.

I hate to think of the torment of kids raised
fearing hellfire. Etc-

Then we get the twisted adults such as populate
these pages.

Some day maybe humanity will mature enough
to put an end to this child abuse.

Wow. That was weird. But a serviceable example
of the theo-vice of making things up.

As for convoluted, as Mom would say, if you
cant explain it in simple direct words-you do not
know (wtf) you are talking about!

What makes you believe "the question of whether this is 'all there is'" is inevitable?

You do understand the meaning of the word "inevitable" don't you?

Your single anecdotal experience is hardly a sound basis for declaring something is inevitable...certain to happen; unavoidable.
Your minimalizing my experience doesn't negate it. And it's hardly singular. It would be a special kind of insanity were I to base a generalization on my experience alone.

Sounds good. Take as many steps as you like. Myself, I am satisfied with my faith in God and Christ.

Indoctrination is the process, belief is the result.

The creos are constantly proclaiming that those who
accept evolution only do so coz indoctrinated.

OK. My point was, indoctrination is not belief. When I speak of 'belief', I speak of Biblical belief. If one has been indoctrinated and believes on that basis, that is not belief. That is indoctrination. Belief is when one believes it.

Sure, and cows are not pigs. Nobody needs
to be told. Why do you go on about it?

Were you taught to accept this god-belief
and to not doubt or question it?

Nobody doubts you believe a lot of
odd things like flood, but how did it happen?

You must have been taught.

I have an Uncle who still spouts Mao-talk.
He sure believes that stuff. He was taught.
You were taught, you believe.

What is the diffrrence?

What I find even more striking are those who employ personal
abuse to disabuse another of wrongful views. They rage that
their "facts" don't convert the other from wickedness, when such
facts are mere opinion. That too is irrational.

Yep. 'facts' is a word that gets thrown around way too much.

Because one can be taught and still not believe. But one who believes, cannot be taught out of it.

Consider Helen Keller. After Anne Sullivan taught her how to communicate with her hands, she told her about God and Helen replied she already knew Him, just not His name.

Maybe we have a semantics prob here.

Someone can try to teach you math. Two
plus two is four. You could just belive
that.

Or you could understand it. Once you understand it,
ceasing to believe would be imposdible given normal
mental health.

I believed my boyfriend I would get married. Now that
he is gone, I dont believe it. It was real easy to
teach me out of it.

We all have beliefs that we later learn to drop.
So you must have something in mind other
than "cannot be taught out of it."

I believe that the theory of evolution is correct.
I understand it quite well, it all makes sense,
all known facts support iy.

NO creationist we talk to has a clue. They
disbelieve their silly fantasy about it, as do
I!

BUT-If someone did show proof its wrong,
I would cease to believe it.

Shown proof that Noahs ark is but a fable,
some accept that they got it wrong.

Others find themselves unable to adapt,
like a person who has a wayward son but
cannot believe lil Johnny robbed the bank.

Personally, I dont see how a religion that
can only exist in an atmosphere of denial,
willful ignorance and falsehood is worthwhile.

To each his own though.

Well, I said that I am talking about Biblical belief.

Your belief is based on the scientific method, evidence. It is not really belief. It is a conclusion you come to based on the evidence at the moment. Take away the evidence, you change your belief.

Biblical belief, faith, has nothing to do with your scientific method. Because of your requirement for your 'belief', you will never come to the Christian faith.

As to existing in denial, the Christian believes you are living in denial. (Rom. 1:18-20)

I didn't minimalize your experience. I rejected your conclusion about "inevitability". It really doesn't matter if it's just you or you and some others. It seems you do not understand the word "inevitable". If it didn't happen to me or some others, it's not inevitable.

It would be a special kind of insanity were I to base a generalization on my experience alone.
Your words. Far be it from me to analyze you.

But this conversation has not been about your faith in your god. It has been about your nonsensical assertion that there are no atheists. Clearly, you do not believe the likes of Shiva, Atlas, and Allah are god. Clearly I, and many others, do not believe the likes of Shiva, Atlas, Allah, the Jesus triumvirate are god. Why must you pretend that I believe in any gods? Does it feed your ego?
