Tolerance

Is there a risk that our society will go too far when it comes to tolerance? I mean is there a risk of us allowing unhealthy and harmful ways of living to come accepted in our society?

examples would be bestiality or paedophilia etc.

I know thsoe are extreme situations but sometimes I feel that the wests tolerance is becoming too tolerant to the extent that it takes away other peoples freedom.

hopefully ill get a shut up tarasan of course its not!!

that will make me feel better :)

Interesting question.
Unhealthy and harmful to whom? If your life doesn't harm or impact negatively on others, then it's fine what you do with it.

If mutual consent is involved for something that some may find offensive, then fine (those offended shouldn't be staring in the first place!)

We already have accepted unhealthy and harmful practices - drinking, smoking, poor diet.

Yes, I think it is certainly a risk, but I do think we have pretty distinct lines that shouldn't be crossed. As the lines become more and more based upon reason rather than superstition, the stronger they will become. If we abandon reason (along with superstition), then we'll be in trouble.

Do you have any examples?

Sorry, but tolerance has already gone too far and it already interferes with people's freedom. I don't like political correctness because no one is obligated to like someone else.

I honestly don't think the average person is any too eager in engage in bestiality or pedophilia, regardless of what level of tolerance there might be. And I don't see any indication that the average person is much inclined to tolerate either one, especially pedophilia, so I wouldn't lie awake at night worrying about it.

It's true that the freedom to beat children or put them to work in factories has been curtailed, as has the freedom to discriminate against various classes of people and the freedom to commit acts of violence on various classes of people. But I can't say those are freedoms I'm interested in defending.

i dont those were two extreme examples, Im more inclined to think about impeding on peoples rights in a bid to be tolerant, like for example people being arrested for speaking their beliefs of homosexuality, or certian people being attacked for certain beliefs they hold because people find them intolerant, I know a few times I was openly attack by a homosexual merely because I told them I was a Christian, I could go on, but ill stop for now :angel2:

I agree..Its like HELLO!!! tolerating harmless behavior..Tolerating loving peole ..doesnt LEAP to every one is going to start humping dogs and raping children for Christs sake!

We need to be MORE tolerant IMHO..not less..Every one isnt cookie cutter!

We arent "drones" walking around...We are individuals!

I think our society still has morality. Things like bestiality and pedophilia are only practiced by a few people on the fringes of society.

And yes, shut up tarasan <3

In what way were you attacked? Did they stab you? Shoot you? Pistol whip you? Pummel you with their fists? Kick you in the head?
