Tom Hanks, Mormon ??

He may have been once. I really don't know much about his past, but I do know that he isn't Mormon now. He's Orthodox.

On the other hand, after his participation in that awful film of the Da Vinci Code, I could cheerfully start a thread called, 'Tom Hanks. Orthodox?' and the scary thing is that I'd be tempted to answer 'No'. But that would be judging him wouldn't it?

Yeah, according the article, he claims to be Greek Orthodox, but attended an LDS church for just under two years, as a kid, when his stepmother was involved with the church and brought him along..

His father is Catholic.

Yeah, I wouldn't think he is too religious now...

I don't think that attending church as a kid for a few years makes you anything but a kid.

According to this article he would have attended church from age 5 to 7, his stepmother being a member, but of course Tom being too young to be baptised...

His stepmother is no longer active in the church, according to Tom Hanks.

'In another interview, he (Tom) said: 'My first stepmother was somewhat flaky. Her love of the Mormon Church was just one of the reasons I think dad left her. Dad did kind of rebel against it. She's not a Mormon now. She's probably into astrology or something.

'From this link: Tom Hanks was himself a Mormon

Claims to be?
I guess I shouldn't say "claims to be," just has been seen attending St. Sopia's Greek Orthodox church, in Los Angeles, according to this article, his wife being Greek...

From the last part of the article.

"It (St. Sopias Greek Orthodox church) is one of the biggest and fanciest Greek Orthodox churches in the country. Any Greeks involved in showbiz attended this parish. I saw a few familiar faces from time to time. We even saw Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson a couple of times...

From an interview published in George magazine, April 1998:
The major religion I was exposed to in the first 10 years of my life was Catholicism. My stepmother became a Mormon. My aunt, whom I lived with for a long time, was a Nazarene, which is kind of ultra-super Methodist, and in high school, all my friends were Jews. For years I went to Wednesday-night Bible studies with my church group. So I had this peripatetic overview of various faiths, and the one thing I got from that was the intellectual pursuit involved. There was a lot of great stuff to think about. What were the four spiritual laws? Are you a post-tribulationist or a pre-tribulationist?

He hasn't just been seen attending - that would be way too little to be considered Orthodox. He has been accepted into the Church by Chrismation - he is Orthodox. That's why I said, back in the day, that he should have been refused the chalice by his priest for his role in the Da Vinci Code.

Great, thanks for that info...

What, concerning his role in the Da Vinci Code, would make his membership in the Orthodox church at risk ???

I was also dismayed he participated in such a produuction, as I am also disappointed in Ron Howard for producing it.

Why? Because it pointed out that Jesus Christ could have been married? Oh yes, I forget, that is a horrible thing. Honestly, my favorite line was "Why couldn't He be divine and married?"

Because that wasn't part of his mission or role he was to play while on this earth.

Good thread topic/starter...
