Tongues of the Holy Spirit are real

Why does one go into a trance when one speaks in tongues. Every time I speak in toungues I reach a higher state of consciousness. Just like when you meditate or in hypnosis. Surely gobbeldygook does not have that power?
That is confusing terminology. When people say 'Higher state of awareness' its supposed to mean greater awareness of their body, thoughts, feelings and surroundings. It is a lucid, aware, intensely effortful purposeful state. It does not refer to any depressed state or relaxing of mind. The mind resists higher states of conciousness just like it resists any other kind of learning or exercise. If its easy its not a higher state. Its some other item, possible a non mental item.

There are two possibilities. 1. It's in your mind. 2. It's demonic.

My money would be on the first, but I wouldn't completely rule out the second.

Speaking in tongues and healing were gifts used by Jehovah God's Holy Spirit to demonstrate to the people of that time that his approval had switched from the Jews, who had rejected his son Christ Jesus as Messiah, to the newly formed Christian congregation, which consisted of people from all the nations, who had different languages. However, by the time the apostles had finished their missionary work and died those gifts were no longer needed and were done away with.

Two thousand years later some people are still speaking gibberish in modern day Christian congregations, with no one there who understands the alleged language and no one to interpret it. Don't formulate an opinion on the Bible from this curious observation out of ignorance. With accurate knowledge you know those people are imitating something they don't understand. (1 Corinthians 12:7-11; 1 Corinthians 13:8)

What's a 'higher state of consciousness'? 'High' in the sense of feeling ecstatic?

Or in some useful way, so that you return with incisive insights into real things, and proceed to apply them?

I was a member of the United Pentecostal church for 8 years. And I use to miss speaking in tongues till I was blond and I missed the hyped up excited crazy worship,

I thought about other forms of worship. I do use Zen and I do think there's a connection between tongues and meditation. I use to be more alert and clear minded sober minded after I got through with a hard tongues talking worship service, But then again we all did chant some when we worshipped together and chanting does have the affect of clearing up your mind and making you more alert.

After being out of it for 19 years I go back and listen to hindu chanting and worship music and may go to a Yoga Kirtan service which is connected to the Hindu religion with chanting and dancing.I still love the culture. But I now don't believe that tongue talking Christianity is the only way to go to heaven which is the difference.

I've heard someone speaking other languages words I could recognize from Hebrew or something similar. This person didn't know Hebrew.

So IMO the subconscious mind is capable of creating a spiritual experience for us without any, lets call it divine source. That's not to say such a source doesn't exist but how would we know if it is an actual external source?
If you get rid of the idea of God as external to oneself, problem solved.

Gobbledygook absolutely has that power. It's called the power of suggestion. I'd call it crazy baloney, but that already exists. It's called pepperoni.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
In Jesus days speaking in tongues simply meant speaking other languages. A Roman could speak to a Greek for example. There was no mumbling of uninteligable sounds. This is something people have stared in recent times and has nothing to do with being religious or following Jesus.
The thing with Pentecostals is they have a big thing with what they call the gifts of the Spirit. Interpretation and tongues among them.

It pretty much took off from there.

I feel the same floating sensation that I have felt when meditating. Also I have greater power to experience visions and receive messages fron God.
Could you ask God next time you have a vision to tell you what the hell happened to my faith, and will I ever get it back?

I was so devout and prayerful, chanting Rosaries, going to mass twice a day, chanting chaplets, liturgy of the hours, other prayers, burning candles and incense, enjoying it, and then about three weeks ago, I relapsed on porn, and all my faith just vanished.

I quit looking at porn, thank God, and I pray somewhat, but all that faith I had is gone, all those spiritual practices impossible!

It's like God abandoned me, stopped giving grace for looking at porn and won't return!:flushed:. That porn must be evil stuff and bad for the soul!

Hello fellow Ex-UPC'er! :)

There is. I like to refer to speaking in tongues as a "jazz mantra."

I use to be more alert and clear minded sober minded after I got through with a hard tongues talking worship service, But then again we all did chant some when we worshipped together and chanting does have the affect of clearing up your mind and making you more alert.
Yep. It's part of the "raising the energy" cycle in ritual forms which always follow this form:

1. Close the circle (create the space)
2. Raise the energy
3. Do the work
4. Ground the energy
5. Open the circle (re-enter the world )

This natural order is seen in group ritual in everything from church services to baseball games.

After being out of it for 19 years I go back and listen to hindu chanting and worship music and may go to a Yoga Kirtan service which is connected to the Hindu religion with chanting and dancing.
Admittedly, that is an appealing thing that I miss from those days back in the UPC. But there is no way I could lobotomize my intellectual mind enough in order to build a community with those whose beliefs are so... well, tribal.

I still love the culture. But I now don't believe that tongue talking Christianity is the only way to go to heaven which is the difference.
Of course it's not. I even thought that was a really dumb interpretation on their part, that you have to speak in tongues as a demonstration you were saved. Even in my naive youth, I wasn't that out of touch with reason to imagine that could really be true.

Wow did not know I had another exUPC friend here. I was completely traumatized when I got out of mine. I also was on a mental high high all the time when I was at church. I smiled all the time. My emotions were as if I were drugs, praise God halleluya it was praise God 24 hours a day. SO when I got out I hit a low low bottom.

I found out I am bipolar. I had mania associated with the worship there.I also had one youth director Brother Tommy, I went to about 3 different UPC organizations and one of them I went to for about 6 weeks. The youth director put me in the youth group at age 24 and he use to ask me for hugs all the time although that church was so strict on their dress code standards and they did not believe in women and men socializing in church.

So I was bewilderd as to why the youth director thought it appropriate to constantly as me for hugs. I found out later Brother Tommy Davis
of Apostolic Tabernacle got sent to prison for life for raping teen ager girls there. I am happy I left after being there 6 weeks.

I went into shock and had counseling for it. I knew some of the teen age girls he raped.

I became very sexually promiscous in the last 10 years and now have a month of sobriety from porn and love addiction. I go to a 12 step program. I have had 16 months of sobriety so I am a lot better. But I don't blame the church for my addiction. I am bipolar and naturally hyper sexual on some level and also had some trauma going on from being in psych wards in my teen days along time before I came to church.

I am in the process of getting back in to see a psychiatrist and do some more counseling and also going to mental health support groups so.

But yes there were lots of problems in me going to church and really I was just kind of lost in the dark a long time after I got out of that church on a low low.

But I came out of it. I like Yoga meditation services with Kirtan and Zen meditation groups. Its all good.

Well, lot of things have the power to make people go into trance-like states, including drugs, brain injuries, and a host of mental aberrations. Not to mention that other religions also do this stuff, including Voodoo. There is no proof that you are actually saying anything at all.

Temporary hysteria? No. Hysteria is out of control. These tongues are real.
You're still not answering my question. How do you KNOW they are real rather than temporary hysteria?

If I asked a crazed homeless person if the leprechauns chasing him are real, he will tell me "yes". How is that any different to what you're telling me? Why do you believe your experience is any more real than his?
