That's not where I'm going with this, just so you know.

To me the central point is whether or not course content is at risk of being censored. As I said earlier, the professors mentioned in the article ARE concerned about the censorship question.

If no censorship will happen, then... what? What course of action will a sensitive student pursue if a class they need to take contains trigger-y material?

No. It should be based on merit after K-12.
We should provide as much education to as large a cross section of the population as we can afford, so the end point (high school, associate, bachelor, master, PhD) is variable both with the economy and the individuals' merit and capacity. With that said, I personally choose to work at the upper end. I have taught remedial math, I have worked with people who are phobic about the water, it's really not my kuliana. I will do it when I must, but my calling is to teach science and philosophy, not provide special education or therapy. Fortunately there are plenty of people out there who want to fill those roles, but I do not. So, do not saddle me with the necessity to accommodate those who are, for one reason or another (often through no fault of their own) dysfunctional, that's someone else's gig, after all, a man's got to know his limitations. I am thankful and appreciative that people are there who are willing to relieve me of that burden, I support them in that role.

There are too many people in the world.
I'm sure all would agree that one less Revoltingest would be no problem.
There are Jews in the world.
There are Buddhists.
There are Hindus and Mormons, and then
There are those that follow Mohammed, but
I've never been one of them.

I'm a Roman Catholic,
And have been since before I was born,
And the one thing they say about Catholics is:
They'll take you as soon as you're warm.

You don't have to be a six-footer.
You don't have to have a great brain.
You don't have to have any clothes on. You're
A Catholic the moment Dad came,

Because

Every Revoltingest is sacred.
Every Revoltingest is great.
If a Revoltingest is wasted,
God gets quite irate.

Every Revoltingest is sacred.
Every Revoltingest is great.
If a Revoltingest is wasted,
God gets quite irate.

Let the heathen spill theirs
On the dusty ground.
God shall make them pay for
Each Revoltingest that can't be found.

Every Revoltingest is wanted.
Every Revoltingest is good.
Every Revoltingest is needed
In your neighborhood.

Hindu, Taoist, Mormon,
Spill theirs just anywhere,
But God loves those who treat their
Revoltingests with more care.

Every Revoltingest is sacred.
Every Revoltingest is great.
If a Revoltingest is wasted,...
CHILDREN:
...God get quite irate.

Every Revoltingest is sacred.
BRIDE and GROOM:
Every Revoltingest is good.
Every Revoltingest is needed...
CARDINALS:
...In your neighbourhood!

Every Revoltingest is useful.
Every Revoltingest is fine.
God needs everybody's.
Mine!
And mine!
And mine!

Let the Pagan spill theirs
O'er mountain, hill, and plain.
HOLY STATUES:
God shall strike them down for
Each Revoltingest that's spilt in vain.

Every Revoltingest is sacred.
Every Revoltingest is good.
Every Revoltingest is needed
In your neighborhood.

Every Revoltingest is sacred.
Every Revoltingest is great.
If a Revoltingest is wasted,
God gets quite iraaaaaate!

I'd go take a look at this back here. Support structures for this already exist, are already used, and they work fine. They are also designed to prevent abuse and misuse of these accommodations in the interest of fairness.

I say this sincerely: it's heartening to hear that in your experience this is a non-issue that's already been figured out.

But apparently your experience is not universal, because according to the article many professors are worried.

We should provide as much education to as large a cross section
So there are a limited number of billets in a program and you'd allocate them to anyone and everyone? You would waste positions on juveniles who spend the school year partying rather than to young men and women who are there to excel academically?

We already waste millions on these useless eaters who do nothing but get drunk and vandalize.

The academics should be rewarded for their hard work with a climate of educational nurturing and encouragement, not "Animal House".

LOL... I find that pretty funny, considering faculty members are major players in developing and approving curricular changes, including the sorts of substitutions that might be made for extenuating circumstances like mental disabilities and the like. Why would they be worried when they hold a big chunk of the control rod? Professors are on the faculty senate - the sort of group that a major change like what is required on syllabi would need to go through for approval. Arguably, faculty have perhaps a bit too much control over curricula. Sometimes, their curriculum doesn't make much sense from a student perspective or in the modern job market. Just as an example, why on earth do so many universities require calculus for biology majors? Unless you are going to a medical school that has calculus as an entry requirement, a biology major is much better off taking statistics because that is routinely used in the field, not calculus. But we still have calculus because it is "tradition" and faculty members are like "well, I had to take it, so they have to take it." But I digress... lol.

I certainly would not waste billets on those individuals who do not have the self control to read an entire document prior to voicing their opinion. As I recall I said: "We should provide as much education to as large a cross section of the population as we can afford, so the end point (high school, associate, bachelor, master, PhD) is variable both with the economy and the individuals' merit and capacity."

Your argument means nothing when you resort to attacking me personally.

It seems that you think you're arguing with me, when in fact you're arguing with the professors in the article. Again, I don't doubt your credentials and experience, but what you're relating seems to be in contrast to what the professors in the article are experiencing.

That brought a smile as few things do.
Bravo!
