Trump and McCain - what is a "war hero"?

Even Republicans "admire" Bernie more than Hillary, however now a release of Bernie's 1987 CD singing "This Land is Your Land" (the old folk song) has hit the media cycle after someone took notice of it being played from a boom box at a Sander's rally, and it is so horrible that it threatens destroying his chances of getting the nomination, many are demanding that Bernie apologize to Americans for destroying a folk standard

Maybe those Americans should force every other douche bag in America for destroying Woody Guthrie's socialist "This Land is Your Land"

"As I went walking I saw a sign there
And on the sign it said "No Trespassing."
But on the other side it didn't say nothing,
That side was made for you and me.

In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people,
By the relief office I seen my people;
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking
Is this land made for you and me?"

and somehow it was played at a Cleveland retirement center where the "inmates" went into violent attacks in reaction to being "tortured".

Source?

Right now, the more photos released of Hillary the hag in the news, the more she slumps in the polls, today we find her way behind three top Republican presidential candidates in head-to-head matchups in Colorado, Iowa and Virginia, in the Quinnipiac University swing state polling released Wednesday and published this morning, where she is losing to the Republicans by an average of 7 points.
I believe people put too much weight in these polls. They are small and we have not even gotten into the debates yet.

People like Trump's beaver on his head better than Hillary's hanging haggard face and bowling pin figure, and they like her policies and her history of corruption, failure and lies and scandal even less, she is going to lose the election if she gets the nomination instead of Bernie.
Bold prediction, it really depends on who the republican nomination is.

Really... really? I highly doubt that, of all things, is going to ruin his chances. You are making a lot of bold predictions about this election, we will see I guess.

Will the phony campaign by the liberal media, Mexican drug lords, the few Jeb Bush and WSJ amnesty supporters at FOX, the orchestrated "outrage" by the Jeb Bush, Rick Perry and Lindsey Graham 2016 campaigns destroy Trump's surge?
Nah, Trump will destroy himself far before anyone else does it for him.

I guess we will find out Friday or next Tuesday when FOX releases their latest poll, but my gut is we will see only a minor dip then a rebound. No one cares about McCain's "hero" status, they only care about his lousy voting record, his lack of true reform efforts to help vets, his nutty attempts to get us in a war with Russia, his constant advocacy for amnesty for criminal aliens, and really Trump's statement about McCain being a "war hero" only because McCain was captured isn't a big deal to Republicans. Trump will only be hurt if Republicans think that Trump would lose to Hillary, they don't care otherwise, but the fact is there is a rebellion going on against the Republican "leadership" which is seen as spineless by the voting Republican base, the base is what counts, they will decide, and Trump is seen as the rebel against this "leadership" and will likely continue to be in the top tier.
Don't under estimate the veteran voting base. They are a group to be taken very seriously.

I like Trump, I am dumping Perry. The base does not like Jeb. Don't be fooled, this fighting is all going to help the Republicans, and tomorrow Trump heads for the border. More fun and excitement to come. McCain is seen as a nutjob by the base, so I don't think this is going to hurt Trump in the end.
McCain is seen as a nut job? By who? When was that said? If anything the exact opposite is true since so many Republican leaders have spoken against Trump to defend McCain.

Just remember that SF just parrots what he hear's from Fox and Limbaugh, and both have had a love affair with Trump. However, I wonder if that honeymoon is going to end with Trump making the party to more and more look like the "Party of Stupid", as Lindsey and Jindal have said that their party looked like after the 2012 election.

A hero is one who chooses to perform a dangerous or onerous altruistic act when an honorable but less onerous course is open to him.

McCain did not choose to be captured or imprisoned. His imprisonment, though onerous, wasn't altruistic, and he had no honorable alternative course of action open to him.
He was not a hero.
I define "heroic" differently.
It is recognizing that something of great value must be done, & then doing it despite great personal cost, difficulty or risk.

Of course they are defending him, he is one of them, a politician. Over the years I am finding that I am detesting politicians more and more. I respect McCain's service to his country, but when he came back from the war he became just another all talk, do nothing politician. I had to hold my nose when I voted for him in 2008. The media and republican party establishment hate Trump because they can't control him, and the more he strikes back at his opponents in the establishment and the media, the more I like him. :smileycat:

Sounds like your big beef is with the political process/politicians and not the individuals themselves.

No, I have nothing against the political process, but rather the so many individual politicians who talk and talk but do nothing. So many are greedy, dishonest, power hungry, and corrupt. Sometimes it is difficult to see through all the camouflage and know who you can "trust".

Right, I agree. My challenge is how much power do they, as individuals, really have? If they can't garner support from anyone around them, it doesn't matter what they want to happen, it simply won't happen.

Hero and politiction are exclusive terms nowadays. There's nothing heroic in politics far as I can tell, and you can detect the politics in using the word hero to fit in with any givin agenda.

Sad really.

Even with this broad a definition I still see McCain's capture and imprisonment more as bad luck than heroism. Where was the heroic act?

It's possible to act with heroism as a prisoner of war.
Did he?
I've no idea.
It wouldn't affect my opinion of him in his political role.

During the fire on the Forrestal instead of jumping into the man-overboard net he tried to free a fellow pilot from his aircraft. A bomb explosion peppered him with fragments. Given the option to return home after the incident, he instead volunteered to fly off the Oriskany. As a result, he was eventually shot down and captured. If a guy is willing to run among exploding bombed-up aircraft to rescue a friend, I'll grant him the title 'Hero'.

"...and the home of the brave..." refers to the duty of every citizen to defend their country and the risk that entails. People who die here in terrorist attacks are called 'Heroes'. Anybody who suffers at the hands of tyrants is considered to be a hero, and that's just standard for the USA. I do recognize that some warriors are exceptionally brave and accomplished, but that is recognized by medals and special honors. All POW's are definitely heroes, as are average citizens who are responsible, dutiful participants in the country, whistleblowers, good journalists, people who clean up litter, people who help the disabled etc and so forth. There are many ways to be a hero.
