Trump on Day 1: Begin deportation push, pardon Jan. 6 rioters and make his criminal cases vanish

The article details several items which Trump is expected to address from the get-go:

1. Make most of his criminal cases go away, at least the federal ones

I don't think Trump will ever actually go to prison. So, he'll probably be able to make this happen.

2. Pardon supporters who attacked the Capitol

That seems to be already in the cards, so I guess he'll get this one, too.

3. Dismantle the ‘deep state’ of government workers

What this will actually entail is removing job protections put in place for civil service workers. This was put in place to remove political control over the practical functions of government and leave such things in the hands of experienced, qualified professionals who work across multiple administrations and keep the government running during transitional periods. This could lead to difficulties, to say the least.

4. Impose tariffs on imported goods, especially those from China

This one I have mixed feelings about. I do recall times when it was the Democrats who supported blue-collar workers in what is now the rust belt, and it was the Republicans who were the big cheerleaders for free trade and ending tariffs. When NAFTA passed, the Republicans were unanimously for it, while it was the Democrats who were divided. Now, that seems to have reversed.

5. Roll back protections for transgender students

This will be one of many civil rights issues Trump will have to face if he plans on trying to do anything like this. There will be pushback. Unlike pardons, this is not something that he can make happen with a stroke of a pen.

6. Drill, drill, drill

"Drill, ye tarriers, drill! Drill, ye tarriers, drill!"

This will likely have a negative impact on the environment, although it remains to be seen if there will be any significant price reductions at the pump.
7. Settle the war between Russia and Ukraine

We shall see.

8. Begin mass deportations of migrants in the US

This is probably among the worst of all, since I don't imagine many of them will go quietly. This could be a severe problem.

A lot of that sounds pretty good. Of course any of it has of yet remains to be seen and how exactly they are going to go about it.

The US is already oil independent. Increasing the rate of production and becoming an exporter will only mean that those very limited resources will run out even faster.

Fracking is often used to rejuvenate old wells. The old fashioned method of only pumping out oil in reserves was quick and easy and left quite a bit of oil behind. Fracking releases a lot of that oil. In other words old "dried up" oil wells are now valuable again. They know that there is oil down there without doing any exploration. Once that is gone other methods of finding new reserves will be needed. And each new method tends to cost more money and extracts less and less oil.

Of course Trump is an immoral abuser. He does not care about what bills he leaves behind. He has shown this with the numerous businesses that he has bankrupted. He passed the debt on to others and that appears to be his method of governing too.

What exactly is good here?

Giving the finger to the whole idea of justice and pardoning criminals?

Firing thousands of experienced, qualified workers to replace them with unqualified brown nosers?

Impose massive price hikes on goods and services to drive inflation even higher?

expose students to discriminations?

Mass deportations of legal immigrants and their citizen children? I'll bet anything that none of the immigrants he wants to kick out of the country are white

so where is the good?

It's about their being loyal to Trump rather than their country.
A new kind of justice.
Firing thousands of experienced, qualified workers to replace them with unqualified brown nosers?
Loyalty to Trump is paramount.
Impose massive price hikes on goods and services to drive inflation even higher?
The campaign promises have served their purpose.
Soon reality will set in.

The good lays with the bottom line.

No criminal has been pardoned yet.

Government is massively bloated and redundant. Most positions in government need and requires elimination anyways and if anybody is remotely talented they will most certainly find positions elsewhere in the private sector.

Prices we pay for goids and services remain to be seen, whether they'll be higher or lower, so I don't go off on tangents over what hasn't happened yet, and frankly prices are going to be lowered with Trump's Administration.

Exposing students to discrimination? What the hell are you talking about?

There isn't going to be deportations of legal immigrants that's just plain b******* what you're going to see is deportation of illegal Invaders back to the place where they came from.

Personally I see lots of good coming in the future , and it's about damm time too.

House Speaker Johnson said on a hot mic that he and Trump are going to take a blowtorch the the Affordable Care Act. Back to the private market where you will be denied insurance for pre-existing conditions.
Good. They can start it again right this time before Obama destroyed the entire Healthcare System for millions of people.

The Healthcare System is far from 'affordable' now and what a colossal freaking lie that was , and yes I lost my doctor years ago because of that imbecile.

Good, you can finally, formally retire that silly old nostrum that the US is a "nation of laws." Laws are for the non-elite, and the people the non-elite approve of (however momentarily).

3. Dismantle the ‘deep state’ of government workers

What this will actually entail is removing job protections put in place for civil service workers. It will lead to a considerable amount of chaos on the civil service. Experience, rather than bum-kissing, has a place in efficient and effective service provision.

There are some, limited uses for tariffs. Trump claims that he will impose tariffs on everything not made in America. There seems little question that, in the short term at least, these tariffs will have an inflationary effect, and this is really quite easy to understand.

On the other hand, over the longer term this could encourage the return of some manufacturing to the US, and that would be a good thing. But that has already been happening under Biden, with the CHIPs act and other legislation. Which method is better? I don't know. But I think it wants further analysis -- and analysis is not a Trump strength.
5. Roll back protections for transgender students

This will be one of many civil rights issues Trump will have to face if he plans on trying to do anything like this. There will be pushback. Unlike pardons, this is not something that he can make happen with a stroke of a pen.
MAGAs and Project 2025 want to roll back protections for many more people than just transgender students. I know something about the long, long struggle for LGBTQ+ rights, and I think I know something about how painful this is going to be for a very significant number of Americans. This is just, I hate to have to say it, one of those ways in which the Christian right is going to stuff religion (their religion) up everybody's nose, whether they want it or not.
6. Drill, drill, drill

"Drill, ye tarriers, drill! Drill, ye tarriers, drill!"

This will likely have a negative impact on the environment, although it remains to be seen if there will be any significant price reductions at the pump.
It will certainly have a negative impact on the environment, which for anybody who has being paying attention is already stressed to the max. As @Subduction Zone rightly points out, that won't do much good in the near term, and will use up those resources faster, reducing their availability in the long term.
7. Settle the war between Russia and Ukraine

We shall see.
How? Hand over several millions of Ukrainians to a Dictator they don't want?
8. Begin mass deportations of migrants in the US

This is probably among the worst of all, since I don't imagine many of them will go quietly. This could be a severe problem.
This is one that Trump is actually likely to attempt to get going -- and yet he really hasn't thought it through at all. I predict that this will cause a very great number of Americans to turn on him. Americans, I think, are not going to like thinking of themselves as the nation of "internment camps" and the like, but the logistics of simply nabbing people and getting them out of the country immediately is impossible and incredibly expensive, so there'll be little other choice.

Interesting listening to The Bulwark, with David Frum as guest, who has said that Trump's first administration was the most corrupt in history -- but Trump 2 is going to make that fade into insignificance by comparison. And this is easy to see -- Trump who wants only loyalists and criminals he's about to pardon around him, won't be running a nice, clean, law-abiding administration. wait for it.

Are we pretending he won't rush to pardon himself?
Government is massively bloated and redundant. Most positions in government need and requires elimination anyways and if anybody is remotely talented they will most certainly find positions elsewhere in the private sector.
Wow we are going to need a pitchfork to deal with what you are spreading around.

Trump attempted to purge the ranks of government workers in October 2020 but couldn't finish the job. He specifically targeted civil servants who were "disloyal" to him. Apparently when a civil servant starts his or her job they are sworn in swearing allegiance to the constitution nd the sitting president. Trump was targeting workers sworn in during the Obama administration and now the Biden administration because they didn't swear allegiance to him and were therefor disloyal.
Current estimates put the minimum number of people to be fired at 50,000. And as far as your nonsense about bloated government it has been made clear that all the positions will be filled with Trump loyalists. Trump's Schedule F Plan
Prices we pay for goids and services remain to be seen, whether they'll be higher or lower, so I don't go off on tangents over what hasn't happened yet, and frankly prices are going to be lowered with Trump's Administration.

Well he won't have to. The DOJ seems to be thinking ahead and motioning to dismiss the cases with prejudice. This means the charges can be filed again in the future. Trump's DOJ would have to refile the charges, and then after some work motion to dismiss the cases WITH prejudice which means they are done forever. That seems unlikely and too embarrassing. And if they did try it it might be apvealed and overturned due to deliberate obstruction.
I don't think Trump will ever actually go to prison. So, he'll probably be able to make this happen.
He has 4 years to not die in office first. The guy's mind is not sound, and his overall health is bad.
2. Pardon supporters who attacked the Capitol

That seems to be already in the cards, so I guess he'll get this one, too.
He's already reeling in this promise, saying it will be one case at a time. I doubt they will be a priority, after all they are prisoners and losers.

As noted he may target 50,000 workers. The HR work to replace them with even unqualified people would take years. They could fire people and then worry about filling jobs later, but then the rest of the agendas won't get done. Trump needs a government to make anything happen, including deporttations. The legal challenges will be huge, and do they have enough MAGA lawyers? Ethical lawyers will follow the law.

This is a big one. Most don't understand what tariffs are for. In essence they are added tax on products that will make more expensive American products the same price. So if an American company made ovens that cost $1000, but there are imports that cost $800, the government would add $200 to the import so they both cost $1000.

Trump wants to put tariffs on everything, including things not made in America. So all ovens are just going to cost more, and there is no America option to justify it. And the cost is paid by retailers when the item comes through customs, and then it's paid by the consumer. So Americans will have less buying power. Estimates of how much this will cost Americans is $2700-4000 a year. They get nothing more for that cost.

Since Americans have only so much expendable income less will be bought once the tariffs are implemented. That will cost retailers, and they may have to lay off workers to offset the lost sales. This begins the ripple effect of a recession. It's so amazingly stupid. Trump could still change his mind, and that would be some indication that he still has some brain fuction.
5. Roll back protections for transgender students

This will be one of many civil rights issues Trump will have to face if he plans on trying to do anything like this. There will be pushback. Unlike pardons, this is not something that he can make happen with a stroke of a pen.
Since blacks and gays are acceptable now Trans individuals are the new punching bag to express prejudice and hate.
6. Drill, drill, drill

"Drill, ye tarriers, drill! Drill, ye tarriers, drill!"

This will likely have a negative impact on the environment, although it remains to be seen if there will be any significant price reductions at the pump.
This is irrelevant since it is oil companies that decide to drill. There are already over 3000 drill premits that companies aren't using. It's expensve to drill, and takes a long time. They would have to see a financial incentive to drill more. They currently don't since oil production is at record levels.
7. Settle the war between Russia and Ukraine

We shall see.
Trump won't have any good ideas. He will just want Ukraine to agree to give up the land occupied by Russia. It will depend what aid package Biden arranges, and what Europe will do to make up the loss of American aid. Trump won't accomplish anything.
8. Begin mass deportations of migrants in the US

This is probably among the worst of all, since I don't imagine many of them will go quietly. This could be a severe problem.
I could see some fast tracking of deportations of criminals in custody. But to deport anyone outside the current laws will be stopped by the courts. Now if republicans have the house and senate they could pass new laws that give Trump authority to deport anyone, including citizens. That would be challenged in court, but it would depend if it is a MAGA judge or not. As we see there is a trend to judge shop for those judges who are favorable to a political side.

As for massive deportation, it would require a lot of money, equipment, facilities, and personel. It would also take Nazi level efficiency to organize and transport these human beings. I don't see MAGA having that level of competent leadership. I predict a sort of Keystone Cops who will be tripping over their shoelaces. And many state's AGs have already stated they will refuse to cooperate with any sort of illegal deportation by the Trump admnistration.

Yeah, brain fart. I was saying that Trump could only get rid of these charges IF his own DOJ charged him again, and then moved to dismiss the charges WITH prejudice. But the DOJ can't do it as long as Trump is predident due to DOJ policy, so the charges will stay alive after this term. Smith will be smart to move the court to dismiss without prejudice, that way keeping the charges alive.

He's already reeling in this promise, saying it will be one case at a time. I doubt they will be a priority, after all they are prisoners and losers.

I always figured he might at least have a job for Jacob Chansley in his administration. He could be court jester or maybe press secretary.

As noted he may target 50,000 workers. The HR work to replace them with even unqualified people would take years. Yes, it will definitely be a complicated process, especially since it will take unraveling various rules designed to protect civil service employees.

I agree that this appears to be one of the major issues of contention revolving around Trump. Again, I have mixed feelings about this, since I was against NAFTA and saw Clinton's pushing other Democrats to support it as a betrayal of America's working class. The Republicans were all for it, but the Democrats should have put up more of a fight. Now, it's completely reversed, where the Democrats are fully in favor of free trade, while the Republicans are somewhat divided on it now.

It is a dicey issue on multiple levels. Americans get cheap goods from exploited overseas labor, so that's seen as a benefit to Americans. If tariffs are imposed, it will mean higher prices and greater hardships for American consumers. But then, it could also encourage more domestic manufacturing, which could lead to jobs and income growth to offset whatever price hikes might come about due to tariffs.

There's also national security and supply chain issues to consider.

Since blacks and gays are acceptable now Trans individuals are the new punching bag to express prejudice and hate.

I think this is one of those issues where Trump might just let state governments do their worst in this regard. The blue state governors seem to be entrenching themselves to protect their states from possible federal overreach. This appears that it may turn out to be a kind of procedural cold war between the states. People planning to make road trips across the U.S. may need to be mindful about what states they pass through.

This is irrelevant since it is oil companies that decide to drill. There are already over 3000 drill premits that companies aren't using. It's expensve to drill, and takes a long time. They would have to see a financial incentive to drill more. They currently don't since oil production is at record levels.

Yes, although a lot of people seem to be expecting a price drop at the pumps, but that appears unlikely.

Trump won't have any good ideas. He will just want Ukraine to agree to give up the land occupied by Russia. It will depend what aid package Biden arranges, and what Europe will do to make up the loss of American aid. Trump won't accomplish anything.

I've mentioned before that, whenever America elects a "crazy madman" to office, it seems to have a certain effect on the behavior of the rest of the world. Nixon and Reagan seemed to have that effect as well.

I could see some fast tracking of deportations of criminals in custody. But to deport anyone outside the current laws will be stopped by the courts. Now if republicans have the house and senate they could pass new laws that give Trump authority to deport anyone, including citizens. And many state's AGs have already stated they will refuse to cooperate with any sort of illegal deportation by the Trump admnistration.

I think it would have a ripple effect across America and into multiple countries from where these immigrants originate.

I think people will resist on the street level. I remember a time a few years ago when some Border Patrol agent had someone pulled over within the city limits. I believe he suspected the driver of being an illegal immigrant, although I don't recall exactly. The thing was, he had him pulled over near a city park and a residential neighborhood which was mostly Hispanic, and as the people in the park saw him there, they approached him and started questioning the Border Patrol officer, asking what was he doing there and he wanted with the man he pulled over. It wasn't exactly a riot, but the crowd grew larger and obviously unhappy, so he called for backup. It seemed to end peacefully, but this was just one minor incident.

I can just imagine that, if this goes full tilt into mass roundups, then it could get ugly very fast. (Operation Wetback - Wikipedia)

Of course, if there's mass deportations, how would that work? Just take them to the border and drop them off in Mexico? Mexico wouldn't be able to handle a sudden influx of millions of people. The whole thing is a massive load of codswallop.

Yes, although a lot of people seem to be expecting a price drop at the pumps, but that appears unlikely.

I've mentioned before that, whenever America elects a "crazy madman" to office, it seems to have a certain effect on the behavior of the rest of the world. Nixon and Reagan seemed to have that effect as well.

Most of the Western world's populations are aging out without enough younger workers to support the elderly. This shortage will turn those economies into importers rather than exporters. China and Japan are crashing also from this problem.

The US has a fairly even number of working and non-working but birth rates are also dropping. NAFTA can mitigate this because of Mexico's large younger population. There will have to be increased co-operation across the border for the US to sustain its population. Additionally, we need to increase the number of immigration officers to process requests more quickly which will also reduce the number of undocumented immigrants coming across the border.
