Trump Wants Jail Time for Flag Burners

President-elect Donald Trump proposed on Tuesday a penalty -- including possible jail time or loss of citizenship -- for burning the American flag, in spite of two US Supreme Court rulings that protect the act under the First Amendment as a form of free speech.

"Nobody should be allowed to burn the American flag -- if they do, there must be consequences -- perhaps loss of citizenship or year in jail!," Trump tweeted.

Can't make everything illegal in the land of the free. Perhaps burning Trump effigy's painted red white and blue would blur the lines.

If this happens, I'll cordially invite all my American friends to come over to the UK for your flag-burning needs. You can bring flags from home to burn, or you can burn some of our flags, it's really up to you.

Fair warning, if I come visit, I may offer to pay rent on a couch in your living room. :D

I think impeding upon the freedoms (in this case free speech) that the flag represents is a much greater desecration to it than burning it. Being patriotic and valuing what the flag represents shouldn't require some sort of cult-like idolatry.

I don't think it should be illegal, even though I think it's a crappy thing to do.

BTW, Hillary Clinton cosponsored a bill in 2005 that provided for both fines and jail time for various offenses involving damage/destruction/burning of the flag. The Flag Protection Act of 2005. It did not become law.

If anything, I'm horrified to see Trump thinking like Clinton on the issue.

(Page down to see Clinton listed as one of the co-sponsors of the bill.) https://www.congress.gov/bill/109th-congress/senate-bill/1911/all-info

 Are you suggesting politicians on both sides of the aisle are crappy individuals? Surely, you are mistaken! :D
