Undercover atheists in LDS Church

Mockery is intended to be funny and/or intentionally hurtful. This is neither. It's negative, but that's not mockery.

I'm going to call shenanigans there. Mockery is intended to deride and humiliate; humor is only the intended benefit for those observing, and those will only find it funny if they're pretty terrible people.

I recently listened to both episodes and enjoyed them. I liked that they prayed to know of the truth...and God didn't answer them. So they tried and when it didn't happen they backed out. I see nothing wrong with this.

Sucks to be the missionaries, though. Ha!

If you honestly believe they were sincere in wanting to join the Church for any reason other then criticism, you are pretty gullible.

Is religion immune to criticism?

I'm astounded by the number of times I have seen people who are otherwise proponents of free speech and freedom of religion but who appear to support (strongly or weakly) anti-blasphemy laws. I don't get it.

So you think they were lying when they said that they were open to being transformed by baptism?

No. And now where have I implied such.

Uh, that doesn't have anything to do with this thread...

I liked that they prayed to know of the truth...and God didn't answer them.
But all the time they were praying to God, they didn't even believe in Him. How would they have even recognized an answer if they got one? They would have flat out denied it, because it would have meant they had to renounce their denial that God existed in the first place. Besides, the Book of Mormon specifically says that when you ask God to reveal the truth to you, you must ask (1) be sincere in your intent, and (2) have faith in Christ. Since they didn't meet either of the criteria, they could hardly have expected an answer. (I'd say that anybody who seriously believes that a couple of die-hard atheists even really did pray is pretty gullible.)

I know their reasons for wanting to be baptized. However, as I said before, there are many stories of people who were "against" the church and then had an incredible experience which resulted in a change of heart. The Book of Mormon has a few. There's a story about a man who didn't believe in Joseph Smith and kicked the missionaries out. The "greenie" missionary demanded they go back and tell the man Smith was a prophet. They did, the man kicked them out again and then had a sleepless night. He called the missionaries the next day and was baptized.

Why couldn't the same have happened to them?

Mormons are always spouting the line, "just pray about it!!!!1!!" which is exactly what they did.

edited to add = Of course I'm gullible. I used to be an orthodox Mormon :p

What constitutes prayer? Do you honestly think they prayed? I thought you were smarter than that, Fire.
The prayer was recorded on the podcast. Reminded me of the prayers from Lamoni and his father. They wanted to know about God, prayed and had a 19th century religious reaction to said prayers. The two podcasters said they had faith as a grain of a mustard seed but the baptism still happened. They didn't lie about that.

Also, why didn't the missionaries and various LDS leaders' gift of discernment see through their false intentions?

Because it doesn't exist?
