Video of man harassing woman for wearing Puerto Rico t-shirt

This was weird. A drunken man at a park in Cook County saw a woman wearing a Puerto Rico t-shirt and started harassing her, claiming that her shirt was "un-American." There was also a cop nearby who did nothing to stop him or intercede. The man was later arrested and the cop was put on desk duty pending an investigation. The governor of Puerto Rico believes the cop should be fired.

“Are you a citizen? Then you should not be wearing that,” he says in the video. He also said, “You’re not going to change us. The world is not going to change the United States of America. You should not be wearing that in the United States of America.”

The man in the video was later arrested, but the a Forest Preserves police officer can be seen in the footage watching from about 20 feet away as the woman was attacked and not doing anything, leading to outrage. That officer is now under investigation. In the video, the woman can be heard asking the officer, “I do not feel comfortable with him here; is there anything you can do?” She later says in the video, about the officer, “He didn’t do anything.”

Police have not released the name of the suspect nor the name of the officer. The man was charged with disorderly conduct and assault, police said.

The cop should have stepped in to what was obviously trouble brewing and asked the guy to stay away, and if he resisted and kept attempting to approach and talk to the woman, there would have been cause to slap him with disorderly conduct.

One thing I didn't like, however, was the woman asking the cop to "grab him", when all he was really doing was talking. Granted, he kept approaching in a confrontational, aggressive manner - but all he was doing was airing his unbelievably idiotic opinions. "Grabbing him" shouldn't have been on the menu until the cop had already spoken with him and he refused to desist.

The fact that the cop didn't even go talk to the guy was a problem.

The guy was very confrontational and obviously invading the lady's space. I think she showed great restraint and civility; she was a better man than I.

He was presenting a physical threat. If I were her, I'd have made the same request, followed by, "...before I do"

In the video, I could hear them referring to an earlier incident in which a woman was reportedly being choked by some man. I wasn't clear whether it was the same man shown in the video or if it was someone else, but the cops were already there due to that previous incident before the arrival of the woman who made the video.

Even after other cops arrived, they kept the guy away from her, but you could still hear him arguing with the cops. The one cop who seemed to take charge told him that he was intoxicated, and he was arguing back "That's your judgment!" He was clearly three sheets to the wind, so what was there to argue about? They should have just taken him to the drunk tank to sleep it off.

I'm not even sure what the guy was going on about. Puerto Rico is part of the U.S. It's not officially a state, but it's a territory, and displaying its flag would be no different than displaying a state flag (such as the AZ flag in my avatar). Even Guam has a flag. The Navajo Nation has a flag, as do the Apache, the Tohono O'odham and I'm sure many others.

I am certain that this man would not approve of a Navajo Nation flag on a shirt. These types only consider majority-"white" states to be legitimate.

California is not a majority white state. And their flag has a bear on it, which would be enough to frighten anyone.

I just feel like people have this flawed view of the cops and what their role is. You can't just have the cops responding with action to any old person asking them to "grab him" - even if the "him" is making you uncomfortable. As I said, the cop should have approached the man and asked him to desist, and if he refused, then there would have been cause to take further action.

The guy was a knucklehead but I don't think he was breaking any laws.

I suppose this is not much different than being verbally accosted at a restaurant.

If I am not mistaken, if you ask some one to stop confronting you in a public place and they continue, then you are bordering on assault.

Good question.

I think not as long as there is no physical contact? The guy was protesting. Of course there is no absolute right of protest but free speech?

Drunk and disorderly, and she did supposedly have a permit for that area. That can make an otherwise public area private.

At any rate drunk, racist, and ignorant is a terrible combination.

The cop should have stepped in to deescalate and thrown the guy in the drunk tank.

(I am assuming there is a law about public intoxication in the books)

The guy was later thrown in the drunk tank, though probably not by that officer. And that officer is now sitting at a desk while he is being investigated himself, from the article:

"The man in the video was later arrested, but the a Forest Preserves police officer can be seen in the footage watching from about 20 feet away as the woman was attacked and not doing anything, leading to outrage. It looks like justice was done, but a bit too late for the woman that was accosted.
