Viewers Horrified at Pole-Dancing Children on TV

Pole dancing is not extreme athletics.
When it's done outside of a strip club, pole dancing is indeed "extreme athletics." Pole dancing takes a ton of strength and athletic prowess. It's why real pole dancers, not strippers who only know how to do a few twirls and spins, have such huge and well developed muscles - which pretty much the same reason gymnasts have huge and well developed muscles. It's because both take a ton of upper and lower body strength.

Pole dancing is indeed extremely athletic. It can also be quite beautiful. The strength and control one must have to so some of the maneuvers is intense. I actually see no problem with what the girls did. I have no issue with it at all. In fact, I have found numerous pole dancing videos that I've let my 7 y/o daughter watch with me and we have both found them quite pretty.

Both my kids like this one:
They just think the moves are neat and the music is cool.

We already have huge problem with hypersexualization of society and the objectification of women and girls.
Yes, as a matter of fact we do. And it is not getting better.

I have never heard of pole dancing that wasn't in the context of a "gentleman's club". Maybe I just don't watch enough TV. To me, it is at the mild end of a spectrum known generally as prostitution.

I have qualms about the outfits the girls were wearing. I think they reflect a bit of sexualization, which can have long term effects and be devasting on young girls and women. But the pole dancing itself? It looks like fun. I would have enjoyed it as a kid.

My only problem with that vid is that it is definitely sexed-up a bit.
The practice of kids performing athletic manuevers across a pole are not a problem in itself, just as long as it isn't sexualized.

Given that you were a firefighter back before the war, it doesn't suprise me that it looks fun to you. ;)

When we, as a society, make showing skin or certain body moves or parts in general more taboo than images of people shooting other people, beating each other up, blowing up buildings and more...we have lost all hope for the world.

LOL! Good one!

Sliding down the pole was fun! Surprisingly easy too. If you did it right, it was almost impossible to fall or lose control of how fast you slid down. But what your comment really put me in mind of was how much the little kids who toured the station loved -- absolutely thrilled -- to be raised up on the pole and allowed to slide down it a few feet. It was grins and laughter all around, and sometimes they were so excited they couldn't wait their turns without squirming or wringing their hands. Remembering how those kids took to sliding down a pole, let alone swinging on one, I can I think I can see how attractive pole dancing could be for kids.

I'm not going to argue with anyone here. We'll agree to disagree.

I don't believe a pole dancer is anywhere near the same class as a gymnast who trains intensely in intricate routines six to eight hours every day.

There's a reason pole dancing is not an Olympic sport.

If you think having your child act like a peeler for exercise is better than, say, ballet, or soccer, I think you might have a mental issue that the child will be paying for later anyway. Go nuts! Hire JonBenet Ramsey's parents as trainers! Get them some pasties! Drink and throw beer cans at them!

Maybe too much TV? I almost never watch TV and I know people that practice it and have nothing to do with such things. Perhaps it's different in your area.

To be fair, most people don't let their kids watch violent stuff also.

We definitely live in different areas. I live in semirural Jesustan, USA. My TV is only hooked up to a DVD player.

All I know about pole dancing is from sleazy bars and the people who go to them. Which includes me. I have rather a checkered past.
I see no reason for young people to practice for such a thing, given all the alternatives. Play soccer, do gymnastics, hike in the woods, the list is darned near endless.
Practicing for that career is totally unnecessary.

Never liked arguments from popularity.

You are letting your past experience judge for you. What did you think of Revoltingest's video? Was it sleazy?

I see no reason for young people to practice for such a thing, given all the alternatives. Play soccer, do gymnastics, hike in the woods, the list is darned near endless.
I see this as limited thinking. Despite all the "good kids hobbies" I trained martial arts when I was a kid and I didn't turn out a thug or a criminal. I didn't even beat up other kids for lunch money.

Practicing for that career is totally unnecessary.
Yes for the career you have in mind it certainly is, if you see someone with real skill doing work as a stripper I would be surprised. Probably they have barely enough training for that so you could take someone of the street and show it to them.

You probably can't imagine using pole dancing for getting or staying in shape.
