Vivat barbari.

View attachment 69955

Nos hic primum, et erit hic ultimum.

An anecdote about the words German and Germany.
Ancient Romans used to call all the territories beyond the rivers Rhine and Danube Germania.
And all the populations were commonly known as Germani.
But the Ancient Romans knew that by the term Germani they meant countless populations speaking different Germanic languages, such as Burgundi, Alemanni, Gothi, Saxones, Angli, Teutones (and many others).

So...in Italian we still call that land Germania.
But as for the population and the language, we latinized the term deutsch (thiotiscum) because it's a different language than Gothic or Langobard.

I was thinking, wouldn't the Roman Empire be more analogous to NATO than the EU?

This my flag.

I am a Roman Citizen.

My main dream in life is the resurrection of the SPQR under an Augustus.

Long live the EU!

We need to bring back Latin in place of barbarous languages like English.

Btw you pronounce vivat with a w, barbarorum.

I'm staying down here :(
Eh? Hogmanay not going ahead then?

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I'm going to spend New Year's Eve recovering from getting my left eye zapped with a laser. Just seen the doc, who says I've got a tear in the retina. So I'm due to get done at 11am tomorrow, at St George's, Tooting. Routine, but urgent and I've no doubt I'll feel a bit sore. Hope I'm allowed to drink, though. There's a half bottle of Sauternes waiting.

Yeah, hopefully we can make up for it afterwards.

I'm sorry to hear that :( I'm glad it's routine tho and nothing too heavy.

We ask for voluntary union to an array of countries joined by shared values solidly based in Christianity. If this offends you, well, be offended.
I believe it would be better if there were voluntary union of an array of countries joined by shared values solidly based in reason and compassion than Christianity.

In my opinion.

Thank you Rival, very well said!!

For the unitiated, Rival's witty thread is referring back to mine:

Will empire return?

And a post by @danieldemol which misrepresents my position: Is Catholicism true and...

Mainly because of what I perceive as the call of a certain Catholic and his accomplice to call for the resurrection of the Roman empire.
I believe that if it was a misrepresentation you'd have easily managed to answer these questions;

In my opinion.

No, this is the Christian Roman Empire. The longest lasting one.

Was there a Christian Roman Empire? If you mean the Holy Roman Empire, it was said of that, by Gibbon I think, that it was neither Holy, nor Roman, nor an Empire.
