If there were ever an argument against free speech without bounds, this is it. These people are animals.

Folks this, and the horrible incident that started this, are nothing short of attacks on our freedom. Are we going to have to pass a constitutional amendment to guarantee the right to mourn at our funerals? What are we coming to as a society? :(

That's kind of the downside of freedom of speech. If you fight for this freedom, you must also allow for these sorts of incidents. The freedoms that we value do not lead to Utopian societies, unfortunately.

I would like to see a mass human shield, like those Egyptian Muslims, thousands strong, forming an impenetrable barrier of compassion, making it impossible for the poor girl's family to even see these sickos. I'd try to travel to Tucson to participate; wouldn't you?

It was on fire when I laid down on it.

I'm right there with you, sister.

Typically, local biker clubs take care of that....

They will rev their engines and park their bikes between the protesters and the family, so they don't hear or see WBC's bile.

I saw red reading that story.
"Westboro Baptist Church claims the girl was not innocent because she had the poor taste to be born on 9/11/2001..."
This is just disgusting. Why couldn't Palin put the cross hairs over this church?

Palin intended to win votes for her party.
Since Phelps is a Democrat, she likely saw no potential to win his

:biglaugh:

But I bet he hates every other party, too. My guess is he doesn't vote at all.

I disagree. As with everything else, free speech is not an all-or-nothing, black-or-white issue. You can't yell Fire in a crowded theater, and you shouldn't be allowed to picket funerals with hate speech.

I think people did something like that for Elizabeth Edward's funeral. That's exactly what other need to do here. (Although, it is damn tempting to advocate strongly-written letters to the WBC...)

I wish someone would hurry up and kill them already.

Father Heathen, this is not O.K. This is the same sort of way of speaking that is causing us so many problems today. By saying this, you are not only attacking WBC, but freedom of speech and our democracy. They have a right to express their sick, twisted views within the bounds of the law, and we should treasure that right. We also have the right to advocate against them, which is the right response to those who disagree with us, even when their disagreement is hateful and odious.

You mean like the ones that recently caught fire in Baltimore?

Not sure what you mean. But if those letters were death threats, then they were uncalled for. Allow me to clarify--by "strongly written," I mean language such as, "Your picketing is classless, disgusting, and dare I say unchristian. Shame on you." But no actual threats.

BTW. I think that in light of the shooting incident, America could go for a fresh dish of Black Eyed Peas:

How disgusting. Sometimes I really hate people. The WBC picketers are no better than the sicko who shot that poor little girl. Christians indeed!

Or more precisely, Fred Phelps.

When he dies, this will all go away.
