WBC to picket 9-Year-Old Arizona Shooting Victim's funeral

I disagree. As with everything else, free speech is not an all-or-nothing, black-or-white issue. You can't yell Fire in a crowded theater, and you shouldn't be allowed to picket funerals with hate speech.

Once you start putting limits on 'freedom', especially based on subjective reasoning, then it isn't really freedom is it?
But I am personally ok with setting limitations, when reasonable. So I also agree that these people should not be able to picket funerals.

Father Heathen, this is not O.K. This is the same sort of way of speaking that is causing us so many problems today. By saying this, you are not only attacking WBC, but freedom of speech and our democracy. They have a right to express their sick, twisted views within the bounds of the law, and we should treasure that right. We also have the right to advocate against them, which is the right response to those who disagree with us, even when their disagreement is hateful and odious.

Just because I wish someone dead doesn't mean I don't respect their freedom of speech. It's not his words that bother me so much as it is the attempts to stalk, intimidate, harass and interfere with mourners. I wouldn't censor him. I'm just saying I wouldn't feel too bad if someone did happen to do him in. I mean pulling a stunt at a child's funeral is pretty low.

Cool.

Yeah, we do have to be cautious when retracting the lines of freedom of speech, or any other freedom. We just got done with a president who rolled back freedoms left and right, ironically in the name of freedom, and we have one now who seems to have done very little to correct that. But that's beside the point. The real concern is that it's a lot harder to expand freedom than it is to limit it.

But this does not mean we should hesitate to weed out speech designed to incite violence or prejudice, though. There is this thing called the law of diminished returns, and IMO it definitely applies here. Just because we need to allow most speech, doesn't mean we must allow all of it.

I think im gunna grab my gun and drive down to Arizona, instead of 40 pheasant maybe ill get 40 WBC's!

Really, stop. I mean it. It's not right. There are better, more effective ways to combat these people. Oh, by the way, they would love for you to do just that. They enjoy nothing more than having their opponents arrested, and they finance themselves from the proceeds of lawsuits against the people they incite to violence.

Go tell that to her parents..

"Well sorry about your daughter and all but its their right to do this... sucks don't it?"

Yes, it does. It sucks rocks. However, the best way to combat this heinous waste of skin is not to shoot them, it's to unite in support of the parents, and of our democracy.

Agreed, violence is never a good solution to outrageous rhetoric. In the words of Bertrand Russell: "Do not use power to suppress opinions that you think pernicious, for if you do, the opinions will suppress you" We should endeavor to overcome the WBC's hatred with love and reason.
