Thanks for the question, it gives me something to think about.
I also wonder, or suspect, that some of the scenes in Revelation describe events that God's People are not participants of.
Like these events describing Armageddon.
Like the events included in the vials.
I think Armageddon will result in the physical death of God's human enemies alive on earth at that time, but Satan and his angels will remain alive to witness the results of their actions.
I agree, "People of God will not fight in this battle.
So why does the Bible say it is at Tel Megiddo?
Arial view of Tel Megiddo:
It doesn't really look big enough to have a "pride" parade like the one they have in Tel Aviv.
I tend to consider this is like you say: "Jehovah directly had intervened in battles there.
I don't see this like the old Hal Lindsey model where the Great River Euphrates actually dries up, and the Kings from the east are the Asian Armies.
People are not going to be able to just sit back and watch this on video news channels.
I tend to think this is happening, or unfolding now, in a symbolic fashion.
"And the demonic spirits gathered all the rulers and their armies to a place with the Hebrew name Armageddon .
It's not just any battle, but the ultimate battle, of every single living person alive in the world, against God when He Arrives.
My understanding, which is still unfolding and due for a major edit, is that the assembly for this battle has begun.
I'll stick my neck out here and show what might be a glimpse, or an example of the kings of the earth gathering the people to fight against God.
An example of Paul's falling away that eventually results with Armageddon, all the tribes of the Earth, at war with God:

This list ended with an event which God in Leviticus calls an abomination, separated by 1290 days, which was punctuated by a solar eclipse and a moon which did not give it's light
Armageddon won't culminate until Christ's Second Visitation, but the hall is chosen, and the chairs are rented.
I suspect we wait for a few more guests, some of our brothers and our fellow servants have been delayed.
The show can't begin without them:
Peaceful Sabbath.
