Weathering the Weather

There's a little box on my computer that's telling me its snowing out(its wrong). There's a blizzard warning. Its blinked with alerts several times today to let me know temps are both rising and falling. Someone who is easily worried would be on the edge of their seat with all the notifications I've been getting. Events are canceled, businesses are closing.

The glass door in my dining room shows a different scene. Its a peaceful and overcast winter day. Not even a slow breeze disturbs the trees. I can't argue that its uncomfortably cold(12F), but its winter. Its the Midwest.

All year, these notifications go, leaving people in a state of unrest. Different phenomenon for different seasons, but a steady flow of hysteria about the weather is a year round thing. Without looking out a window, people plan their days around weather apps and Facebook feeds claiming this or that are projected to happen. Out of twenty events, perhaps only 1 or 2 transpire to the extent at which its predicted(if they happen at all).

While its good to be cautious in dangerous weather, I find any weather these days starts getting people fluffed up. I'm not sure if its from the constant bombardment with information(exaggerated or not) or if the lack of contact with the elements gets people more worried than it used to, but it seems strange to me.

How are you weathering the weather these days?

Funny you would post this because I was thinking of posting a thread about the weather here.

I was a little worried it was going to snow on Tuesday, since it was predicted, but it never snowed.
Then today I was checking the forecast since I needed to know what the weather was going to be like tomorrow, since I have to go out to a vet appointment and I would need to cancel today if there was going to be any snow tomorrow. As luck would have it, it is going to remain cold and cloudy today and tomorrow but there will be no precipitation so the roads should be dry. It is Friday when icy weather is predicted but that all turns to rain by Saturday and the extended forecast is for showers and rain and 45-55 degree weather for the next 10 days. That is my absolute favorite winter weather.

Yes, it is good to be cautious in dangerous weather (especially since we are living in the time of Luke 21:11)
No weather problem here as of yet. The halcyon days are usually mild around here.
Looking at the BIG picture I look to the fact that these days are temporary, and in the BIG coming picture I find Jesus will regulate any weather phenomenon as found at Mark 6:51; Mark 4:39.

In many countries "the weather" is a hot topic of conversation. Most small talk centres on the weather.

I tend tend to listen to the old farmers they usually know what they are talking about but ignore everyone else and rely on my weather aps. I have 3, one local, literally, the weather station is less than 100 metres away. Another is Meteo France, the national weather service and BBC. weather.

When i get a concensus verified by a peek out of the window then I'll accept it.

I have the feeling that the weather models the Met Office uses are less reliable than they were, these days. I wonder if this is due to climate change upsetting some of the modelling that is based on historical data.

But I suspect something else is at work, namely caution on the part of weather forecasters, who are worried they will get sued if they fail to predict an adverse weather event. This leads to a plethora of warning flags whenever there is a >10% chance of something significant. There is also a new trend, to name even moderate weather systems as if they were hurricanes. So instead of Hurricane Wilma, we get Stiff Breeze Fred.

As you say, all this information overload tends to wind people up.

I keep reflecting on gratitude for indoor heating and plumbing... its great, wonderous, really! And it gets so little thought(along with the a few humble kitchen appliances).

This has been the second year there's been no feral cats to care for... in years past, in winter storms where being outside was dangerous we'd have to trap them(using creative means, as we didn't actually have traps) and move them to warmer areas. One year we stuck a hot water bottle in a box of blankets... one by one, we got each of four feral cats(so cold they didn't even try to flee as we moved the box to the bathroom).

I just took a peek at the newspaper weather column. It actually seems more up to date than the computer's weather alert, despite being printed yesterday.

I prefer to think of my weather app as a whether app because whether the predicted weather will happen is about a 50% chance.

Of my aps the local one is pretty good. There are times it has told me that it's raining when we are having good sunshine. The thought to ditch the ap is usually forgotten a few minutes later when the rain comes down

We got all the snow and ice up here in Snohomish County.

We had a contractor once who was paid to work on something and had sent a message the night before, asking if I wanted to cancel because rain was forecasted the next day. I told him no, we'd see what the next day would bring. He skipped town, and when I called to ask where he was, he said he couldn't work in the rain, and he was 3 hours away. I told him it wasn't raining, it was sunny. He argued with me, because he weather app said it was indeed raining. I didn't have a camera on the phone, sadly, to show him I was standing under a sunny sky...

Yesterday I was out for too long in our unseasonably cold weather. And I walked for far too much of it. But then it improved. It got colder.

Yes, it got colder and that kept me warmer. The problem was that it was right at the freezing point. The snow was very wet. My shoes got very wet. With ice cold water. I went inside for a while and then walked to the store after sunset. It was much better. Everything on the ground was colder and frozen solid. My shoes stayed dry and I stayed warm.

I always like getting weather reports from Churchill Downs, a local horse race track. They seem to get the weather reports/forecasts correct. They have to. Severe conditions could jeopardize their bread and butter (horses).

I'm in california, we don't have weather. :D

Right now I'm standing outside drying off in the sun after taking a nice cold shower down at the beach.

Me too!

Except, for the sun, I'm drying off in the house. And, instead of drying off from a shower at the beach, its from walking in the snow.

We've had an inch or two for covering for the last week or so, and at these temps, its not going anywhere.
