What are Jews called when they leave Judaism

Can't seem to get an answer here, I've been given the opinion that the terms



JEW & JUDAISM are synonymous, so what is a jew called when they leave Judaism?/

They are still Jews. You can't leave being a Jew behind anymore than you can leave being a penguin behind even though you are a penguin who denounces being a penguin.

I was born in Newcastle, so I am a Geordie. I left Newcastle when I was 4 yrs, but I am still a Geordie.

Jews will always remain a Jew irespective weather he joins another Religion.If he becomes an atheist then he still retains his status as a Jew.So far as the word "Judaism" is concerned its a label that was given to them by the Greeks.Really speaking they do not have a religion.What they follow is a culture that was taught to them by their Prophets.Simply put it they follow a way of life.

What do they want to be called? And why should we be imposing a label on someone who does not want it?

As I understand Orthodox Judaism, their view is that the Jewish faith is an obligation and a privilege given to the Jewish nation by God. It is not necessary for other people to practice that religion: it is sufficient for then to follow the Seven Laws of Noah. But if you are the child of a Jewish mother, then you do have the obligation and you can't opt out!

Yeah gjallarhorn got the nail on the head. If you're in, you can never get out.

Probably part of the reason we take conversion a bit more seriously than other religions.

I was about to say... this does sound like the mob. There's no getting out. And my grandma, who I never had the guts to tell I became a Christian because she never showed a problem with smacking me, and now I'm particularly glad I didn't.

It does seem a bit strange to me that you yourself can't decide to disassociate and have that be entirely decisive. But insofar as this is defined in terms of familial relations I suppose what can you do about that.
