I think we have a theism transform in the brain, programmable too, so there is a basic structural unit, and cultural input to boot. Making much of the time for all kinds of cool feeling zappy hogwash.

Assuming there is no deity, what are people really worshiping when they worship deity?

I think best case, they are worshiping nature, the universe, etc in the guise of a deity or deities. That is, when they ask themselves what sort of relationship they should have to deity, they are effectively asking themselves what sort of relationship they should have to nature, the world, the universe, etc.

Worse case, they are worshiping their own personality projected large.

Well, people who worship deities do really believe their deity(-ies) is(are) real. So your entire thread is really moot since it only applies to atheists who want to make fun of theists.

Quite on the contrary.

It is actually more relevant than Sunstone proposed, because it suggest possible interpretations of competing doctrines.

True. But then, I am an agnostic with strong atheistic tendencies.

Then your agnosticism would not allow you to easily dismiss any reasoned position.

Actually, Tyson is a *real* astrophysicist.

Yes....*real*.

Interesting. Elaborate.
What's to elaborate, when talking about the universe, he often brings the discussion around to how human caused global warming is similar to planetary warming in our solar system (?), and how humanity is an evil force in the universe.

Kinda a funny question to ask a Pagan. I suppose the question makes more sense if one's theology doesn't regard gods and reality/nature as synonymous to begin with.

Quintessence,
If we look at the way the world is going, we can see that what the Bible says is accurate, 1Corinthians 10:19-22.
One of the very worse things people are doing is causing people of other nations to Blaspheme the Name of God, because they call themselves Christians, when the people of the United States are nothing like a Christian should be, 1Peter 2:21,22, Romans 2:23,24.
Jesus said that his followers would be known by the love they have for one another, John 13:34,35. Do you believe that bombing other nations in order to make a few very rich people richer is love??? People may claim to be Christians, but their actions prove they are liers, Titus 1.15,16.

I'm sorry, you're going to have the explain how this is at all relevant to my comment. I'll give you that chance before I assume you are preaching (which is against the rules, by the way).

Oh no, it's biblically backed. Not my problem if you haven't read the bible thoroughly enough, or weren't taught various things.
I would have thought that it was clear from above that I don't really care what the bible says, sync - which, by the way, does not mean I don't know what it says. I've read your book, and likely actually know more about it than you do. (Of which, don't get in a bunch; I've hardly the interest to get into a spat regarding this.)

Also your opinions are hardly "biblically backed" - a second opinion that, again, means squat.

Clearly not, because your criticism isn't biblically backed. If you are literally stating that these are just opinions, then it would hardly be "misinformation", as it would be subjective. You have an over estimation of your biblical knowledge.

Why on earth would what I say be "biblically backed," when I don't believe in the veracity of the bible? That's just asinine, sync. Your opinions are noted, and duly rejected.
