9. Make more laws against hate crimes and hate speech

More censorship? Are you sure you want the gov't deciding what is hate speech & putting people in jail for it?
Perhaps you trust Obama with such power, but what if one of those people (the "R" party) wins office in 2012?

Revoltingist the Republicans have never made laws against hate speech. I wouldn't expect them to start now. The GOP thinks hate is good for politics. Besides you ignored my other 9

My response wasn't predicated upon Republicans making such laws. But I posed a question about whether you trust
them to enforce hate speech laws when they win office some day. Would you trust them not to engage in mischief?

The GOP thinks hate is good for politics.
Oh, yeah...the Democrats are so loving. You guys are cute.

I certainly did. I picked the more interesting one to address.

What was that post about?

Revoltingist I'm not a Democrat. I'm non-affiliated

I didn't know your party affiliation, although you seem to lean more Democrat than Republican, but that's neither
here nor there. Would you trust a Republican president to enforce hate speech laws in a just fashion?

Revoltingist that doesn't apply, because the GOP doesn't seem to care about hate in the first place. The right has always used hate as a political leverage. I may seem to lean toward Democrat because I'm liberal, but I think the Democrats are nearly as attrocious.

The censorship & thought crime issue interested me more than the other controversial wishes, since it transcends the
usual left vs right donnybrook. I'd say it does apply, since granting the gov't a power to do something for you is also to
grant them the power to do something to you. If you'd rather not address it, then I'll stop asking.

Hi Mercy,

Persuasion via intimidation. Or, at the least, good ol' sadistic humor. Yep, that's pretty much par for the course for conservatives.

Wouldn't this be more in line with your thinking since you want the government censoring 'hate' speech (whatever that means)?

Revoltingist I think the government needs more control yes. It's about what society needs. When there is no regulations anything goes.

I understand. But I prefer less regulation, because where
there is regulation, anything goes....for the government that is.

I don't fear total anarchy, but the version of anarchy that has minimal government looks quite appealing.

Minimal, but not too minimal.
I fear total anarchy, though. But it will never happen.

2) Scale back the military to just national defense & honoring treaties we've signed. We won't become wusses though....continue to develop & deploy really cool weapons.

What about wiping out terrorist groups in foreign countries?

3) Dump all federal social programs.

Agreed.

5) No federal foreign aid.

This could backfire in many cases.

8) Give everyone the right to fail, from citizens to big banks.
Absolutely agreed.

2. Legalize gay marriage for all US adult citizens.

Yus! :D

4. Abolish the DEA and decriminalize all controlled substances. States may set their own drug laws.

Good idea

5. Change the 2nd-highest income tax bracket from 33% to 50%, and the highest bracket from 35% to 60%.

 No incentive to get rich nowadays is there? The government's just going to take all your hard-earned money away.

8. Create a branch of government to enforce and prosecute sexual violence laws.

It's bad, but it's definitely not more serious than murder...

9. Set a nationwide age of consent at 15 (much of Western Europe has this or lower), and an age exception for partners that are no more than 4 years apart in age. Non-consensual sex must be harshly prosecuted regardless of age.

13 I say. Even though I would never support kids having sex that young, if the 13 year old is having sex with her 15 year old boyfriend or whatever, it is consent and not rape.

10. Remove free speech protection from blatant hate speech and hate groups.

This is a hard one because you put one limitation on free speech it will lead to another and another and another. Check out the Westboro Bapist Church case if you're interested in this.

Not in the same way though..
Don't get me wrong, I live on the gulf coast and I absolutely despise BP, but everyone in the company that knew about their shortcuts is responsible - not just management.

Leave it up to the countries of residence, generally. That could get more complicated if the country
is harboring a group currently attacking us, in which I'd err on the side of minimal intereference.
