What Are We?

I came upon a child of god
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, where are you going
And this he told me
I’m going on down to yasgur’s farm
I’m going to join in a rock ’n’ roll band
I’m going to camp out on the land
I’m going to try an’ get my soul free
We are stardust
We are golden
And we’ve got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

Then can I walk beside you
I have come here to lose the smog
And I feel to be a cog in something turning
Well maybe it is just the time of year
Or maybe it’s the time of man
I don’t know who l am
But you know life is for learning
We are stardust
We are golden
And we’ve got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

By the time we got to Woodstock
We were half a million strong
And everywhere there was song and celebration
And I dreamed I saw the bombers
Riding shotgun in the sky
And they were turning into butterflies
Above our nation
We are stardust
Billion year old carbon
We are golden
Caught in the devil’s bargain
And we’ve got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

We are each but a tiny atom in the body of Christ. Picture the human body. It begins as an egg, with 1 cell, and that cell divides and splits into 2 then 4. And for a while, they are all exactly the same, but then they begin to change. Some cells become heart cells, some become skin cells, there are nerve cells, blood cells, brain cells. Groups of similar cells join together and form the organs of the body.

We are like those individual cells, and religion is like the organs of the body. The heart cells work from the day you are born till the day you die. Other cells have a much easier life, some cells only live for a little while and die and are replaced, other cells stay with you for the lifespan of the body. Of course the body can survive without some organs, or limbs. But in order for the body to be complete and whole, every single cell must be doing it's purpose with optimum performance.

I've heard of Christian Fundamentalism....but the functionalist approach to the body of christ....never occured to me...Christian Functionalism :D

Scientists say that 25% of our genes are the same as those of a banana, that we are made of stardust, and that we evolved from apes.

Creationists say that we are created in the image of God.

Based upon all of the above data,
I'm not coming up with a very pretty picture of God. Something sorta squishy, but shiny, yet hairy?

Okay, now that I have that out of my system, here 's the real answer.

We are divine mortals. Not a body with a spirit, but instead, a spirit living in a physical body. The soul is the dwelling place of the spirit and the body is the dwelling place of the soul. Your spirit is the eternal you. It is ageless. The purpose of life is to expand and magnify your spirit, the eternal you, your Real self.

I agree *smiles* thanks for that perspective

From where we are if we investigate, we are nothing. And from that nothingness if we investigate, we are everything.

we are . . . we are. . . . the youth of a nation.
Quoting POD in a serious discussion doesn't really add credibility to your point ;) Try Pink Floyd or Bob Dylan

Ain't it just like the night to play tricks when you're tryin' to be so quiet?
We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it
And Louise holds a handful of rain, temptin' you to defy it

Bob Dylan - Visions of Johanna (just for you rob :p)

we are young, no one can tell us we're wrong!

Perhaps this might be excusable in young individuals, but it is certainly horrifying in young nations.

Agreed. Maybe someone should tell Dubya's pupeteers?

I think Ash was on about a lyric though Mr S ;)... unfortunately she either got it wrong or Imma dufus... which is true either way so:

Love is a battlefield - Pat Benatar

We are young, heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield
We are strong, no one can tell us we’re wrong
Searchin’ our hearts for so long, both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield

You’re beggin’ me to go, you’re makin’ me stay
Why do you hurt me so bad?
It would help me to know
Do I stand in your way, or am I the best thing you’ve had?
Believe me, believe me, I can’t tell you why
But I’m trapped by your love, and I’m chained to your side

We are young, heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield

We are strong, no one can tell us we’re wrong
Searchin’ our hearts for so long, both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield

We’re losing control
Will you turn me away or touch me deep inside?
And before this gets old, will it still feel the same?
There’s no way this will die
But if we get much closer, I could lose control
And if your heart surrenders, you’ll need me to hold

We are young, heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield

We are strong, no one can tell us we’re wrong
Searchin’ our hearts for so long, both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield

We are young, heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield

We are strong, no one can tell us we’re wrong
Searchin’ our hearts for so long, both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield
