What Do Enlightened People Know that Others Don't?

I am curious about how you, dear reader, would answer a question that I found earlier today on a certain noble and esteemed website::

"What Do Enlightened People Know that Others Don't?"

Comments? Jokes? Observations? Muddled Rants? Snotty Remarks? Thinly Disguised Efforts to Solicit Nude Selfies From the Other Posters?

HAPPY BONUS QUESTION: Offhand, in what way(s) is the question a trick question (assuming it is one)?

SECOND HAPPY BONUS QUESTION: Can you be enlightened and yet not consciously know you are enlightened?

Please Note: My opinions expressed in this thread are my own, do not always reflect established wisdom in these matters, and therefore should be taken with extreme caution. However, all reputable and important Zen Masters themselves agree that it is pure folly for anyone to disagree with me.
We don't know any more than any else.

Nothing, for personal enlightenment is as self fulfilling and prone to unreasonable emotional bias as adherence to a personal religious belief.

That's a fascinating point! Do you think a person who wasn't themselves enlightened would be in a position to know that about enlightened people for certain? Or would you need to be enlightened to know that to be sure it was true?

Presumably people who are enlightened know what it means to be enlightened vs unenlightened...
while people who aren't unenlightened are presumably clueless.

That's a genuinely interesting question to me, PT. Thanks for raising that! I wonder -- sincerely wonder -- whether it's really that way? For instance, is it possible to be enlightened at a non-conceptual or subconscious level and never really become consciously aware that you are enlightened? At least not know you were "enlightened" in an intellectual way? What do you think?

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
I was wondering how the unenlightened crowd was able to tell the difference between who is unenlightened and who is enlightened without knowing themselves what enlightenment is so they could disguinish between the two.

It's so obvious now. Hire an enlightened consultant who is Truly Enlightened.

The definition of 'enlightened:'

Definition of enlightened
1 : freed from ignorance and misinformation
  • an enlightened people
  • an enlightened time
2 : based on full comprehension of the problems involved
  • issued an enlightened ruling

Therefore, what 'enlightened people know that others don't," is...

more of whatever it is.

Now all you have to do is figure out what 'it' is.

that humans are animals. it is strange that most humans separate themselves from the animal kingdom. they say a dog is an animal but a human is different than an animal. in reality we are nothing more or less than an animal. we are animals.

Just a matter of quality. They might know less than us, but more about things that matter to us on an essential level.

It's interesting that you would use that particular definition of "enlightenment". Do you think other people might legitimately use other definitions? Or is there something special about the one you used that precludes anyone using some other definition?

Can I become enlightened just by knowing and accepting as fact that humans are animals?

I'd be inclined to agree. But I wonder, Vee, do they care? That is, do they care whether they are swimming with or against popular opinion?

I'm not following you. Could you please re-phrase that?

my experience: creative imagination is fed by outside information, ideas of things I never thought of just pop up in my mind as of nowhere and no reasonable base that I was coming with those ideas on my own...sometime it comes through synchronicities and dreams.
