I've been on and off of it over the years...mainly off. I was wondering what you think of it, what has been your experiences? Just curious. :)

Never been on it. Really don't know what it is.

I don't use Facebook at all.

In addition to having no real use for it, they seem to not realize that privacy is actually a thing. I'm with Notch (creator of Minecraft) on this one: Facebook creeps me out.

Haven't been on FB for some 3/4 years now. I don't even know what it's like anymore.

I hadn't been on it in a while, a few years...then started up again, then went off...started up. lol It is fun in some ways. To me, it is somewhat boring.

Hi jeager, yea I kind of agree. The forums at least have stimulating conversation. FB is largely a brag book, and most of the stuff posted isn't brag-worthy. lol You're not missing much. :p

What an interesting comment! So you believe that FB infringes on privacy issues? It does seem intrusive in some ways. Is that what you mean?

My dad is on it. I just don't know if I want to go back. Its a free service, but I miss how it was when I first signed up. The interface stayed the same all the time and I didn't wonder what was going to happen to my buttons and controls between logins. I didn't worry about the company passing out my personal information, and when people wrote games and apps for facebook they were permitted to profit from those games and apps. I used to play games on Facebook until they were suddenly hidden, lost or the developers were discouraged. Everything changed. Now if you write an app for Facebook, you never know if one day Facebook will block your app. If it is blocked you may never know why. If you put information into Facebook, you may login one day and find that you must watch 3 videos before you can access it or you must do 100 push-ups and jumping jacks in order to log out. The day after that Facebook thinks it should be allowed to use your face for advertisements. Then Facebook rearranges all of your controls again. Now its tracking you everywhere you go on every site. Now you can't find your pictures or can't delete something. Its just chaos.

I think $#@$book is unnecessary, unethical, and has become far too pervasive and far too incorporated into day to day life.
Thank gandalf I asked this question, because sometimes I feel like I'm the crazy one when I tell my friends who keep asking for me to join back up...that I really don't like it too much.

Bawwwwwwww-hawwwwwwwwwwwwww.
ROTFLMAO
Why the gafawwww & grins? FACEBOOK!
Seems when my 15 year old son was 12 he had a "liason" with a girl who was 14.
Natch she had her way with a virgin boy. Natch my virgin boy went all kinds of
stupid over this girl who had a reputation of being.......well.......rather free
with her private parts.
Both began a hot and steamy romance using Facebook to tell each other all kinds
of dirty sex stuff, having babies together and worse. (YIKES)
Neither seemed to realize that my boys mother wasn't stupid and could easily
read and PRINT out the conversations which of course mother did!
First she took a copy to little Miss Loosy Goosy's mother to read.
Then she took that mother and confronted my boy.
TWO mothers on his back.
Ouch!
That ended that romance. Then I was informed and felt so sorry for him that
I just reinforced what mamma said.
He hasn't been on Facebook since!:D

They, and many other companies, use the information you provide for them to build a profile that they then sell to advertising companies in order to target ads for you.

Even if you opt out, the profiles are still there, just waiting for any skilled hacker to come in and use it however they want.

Furthermore (though I may be misremembering), I've heard that Facebook can still collect data on you just from using websites that link to them, even if you don't have an account.

And yes, other companies do this too, including Google. But at least they're up front about what they're doing. Facebook seems to enjoy doing a lot of stuff without providing information in a way that people can reasonably hear about it.

I'm not against Facebook, so I'm fine with people having accounts. I just won't make an account for myself until they get their act together and stop acting in ways that frankly remind me of stalker behavior.

I never signed up, because I learned the lesson about not putting your personal life on the internet before $#@%book went out to the general public. I once kept a fairly personal blog, and managed aspects of local personal relationships with the internet. It was a direct cause of some very nasty things, and after that happened, I said I'd never do that again. Some things really just need to be done the "old fashioned" way, and the art of friendship is being lost through the "progression" of technology. But more than that, I just plain do not trust a private, for-profit corporation to be a neutral grounds for facilitating my personal relationships, because they are not a neutral ground. They provide a "free" service in exchange for your personal information, which are then fed into the capitalist system. Not being a fan of capitalism provides additional incentive to avoid things like $#@%book. To make matters more interesting, their "real name" policy is even more creepy. Not just because it feeds into the capitalist machine and privacy-shredding engine even more so, but because it is downright against certain minority groups who are not comfortable sharing certain elements of their identity under their real name. This is an issue specifically for the Neopagan demographic, but also for members of the LBGT community or other marginalized groups.

I deactivated my account awhile ago, but then someone I used to work with died, and when people did try to tell me, they tried to tell me through Facebook.
Generally I use it to get a hold of people who don't currently have minutes on their cell phone, people I don't have a number for, and reposting some of the stuff that I really like, such as the pictures that mention how pit bulls are great dogs who are awesome family pets, but have unfortunately received a very unfair and very bad reputation. "We don't want to fight. We just want to be loved." is what I think the last one I reposted said.

I setup a Facepalm page, but never really got into it. I haven't been back since the first week. I have better things to do with my time.

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
I'm so sick and tired of the endless chain of e mail after e mail perpetually asking ad nausiem "do you know this person" and so and so updated their status, or added a photo that I'm pretty much ready to plea with anonymous to help me to delete my face book account in it's entirety.

Try getting Facebook to delete it for you.... Snicker....lol

Good luck with that.

I'm on it daily. A military lifestyle is somewhat transient and facebook allows me to keep up with the goings on of my friends and family. Occasionally a good natured debate sparks things, too.
Yea, I mean it has some benefits, otherwise no one would find it appealing. I have yet to see a debate of any kind take place over the years of my off and on usage. It seems that most everyone drops several points in IQ in order to post mind numbing memes and boring news stories.

haha yea, I don't think there is a way to permanently delete your account ...but you can deactivate it. I've done that a number of times, and just abandoned it.

yep! :)

Maybe that's the key, is to just use it in moderation, like anything. The thing I've noticed myself and hear about it through friends who use it often, is that it sets in motion a sort of weird competition with people. Like anything, spending too much time on it is unhealthy.

Your post is awesome, wish I could offer more than just one like. :) I'd have to agree, it seems very intrusive, and agree about the neutrality of it all.

I'm bored with it.
That's typically why I've always left it behind.

Yes, agree with you here, Riverwolf. I didn't know all of that about advertising companies targeting ads towards FB members though.

Greatly appreciate the responses here. Makes me feel better to know that I'm not insane, and that many people feel FB isn't all that.

I think it's one of the best tools for networking quickly and keeping in touch with other activists, family members, colleagues, friends, and past theatre and dance buddies. So I'm on it every day. It's gotten me work and to my current lease and location for the business, and the connections happen instantly.

My vote is a thumbs up.
