What do you know about Buddhism?

You may have to school me (I'm old); what's YT? The video is on her sister's phone and we've been trying to get copies (the folks at the funeral home freaked out when we showed them, lol). I try to be pragmatic about all this, but after being involved on a first hand basis I have to say that I don't "not believe".
YouTube.

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
I like reading koans. I I read there was a branch of Buddhism that specifically used koans in their teaching process. A student was given a koan to struggle with. Some would struggle as much as 20 years on their first koan to correctly answer the puzzle to their master's satisfaction.

Like "What is the sound of one hand clapping?"
That would be Rinzai Zen although the use of koans isn't wholly limited to that school.

This is a question i have been thinking of for a long time in the forum :)

I have not seen to many buddhists here, so i was wondering. What do you know about buddhism or what would you ask about buddhism?

I believe in Buddha and have read many of His enlightening Words of Wisdom which I treasure. His path of virtues is what I feel we all need in this age.

My favourite saying is from the Dhammapada ...

A conqueror may conquer ten times ten thousand men in battle but he is the true conquered who conquers his own self. (The Thousands)

And there’s another one.

Not by hate is hate defeated but by love alone is hate vanquished.

These are eternal truths like pearls in a great ocean of wisdom. We read from the Buddhist scriptures every week in our Houses of Worship throughout the world.

I believe I figured this koan out: "What is the sound of one hand clapping?" It is the sound of all hands clapping...did I win?

I thought of a question. Can one ever become completey enlightened? Or do you agree with the Buddha we should always strive to have a beginner's mind?

And

What does enlightenment mean to you? What would be a few examples of being enlightened? Thanks for the topic.

Thank you for your questions :)

In my understanding of enlightenment there is two kind of ways it can happens,
The sudden enlightenment where a person have cultivated example buddhism and feel he/she not getting anywhere, suddenly the person wake up and have become enlighten.

The other way and maybe the most common is the enlightenment over time, meaning when we cultivate it take years to gain the wisdom and the enlightenment level, normally one get enlighten on a higher level (of wisdom) this way.

They say that if an enlighten being talked the teaching to a baby it would become enlighten right away, because the baby do not cling to the physical world like the adult do. why? Because sosiety we live in is "dulling" us down to be futher away from enlightenment, and the baby has not been affected by this yet. So what one part of enlightenment is (in my understanding) is to unclutter the mind to be free.

In buddhism enlightenment is (in one way) explained as blowing out, But to be honest, for a non enlighten person it is imossible to give a right answer to what enlightenment actually is, because it is only when it happens that one know for sure :) So i wish i could give a good answer to you, But the best i can say is that an enlighten being is no longer clinging to the physical world.

No need to wish, your answer is understandable, helpful and wise. Thank you. I want to think about this and then may have more questions later. Thank you.

How did the martial arts arise under the supposed auspices of Buddhism? How was combat taught by the non-violent?

Is there a really cool movie I can watch about Bodhidharma with cool special effects?

The marial arts in buddhist tradition is mostly seen in shaoloin monastary in China , the are Zen Buddhists. As far as i know they traning self defence but actually when they get higher in understanding they will never use it :) so it become a inner battle instead
I am not familiar with the first history of the shaolin buddhist temple, but i know that the buddhist monks first come from India to this monastaries where they learn the kung fu.

I believe in the Buddha as equal to Baha’u’llah no distinction.
So then you could easily become a Buddhist, since it makes no difference. There are probably some wonderful Buddhist temples near you. You also believe Buddha was infallible, right?

I’ve visited and prayed and meditated in many Buddhist temples and pagodas in Burma and Thailand. They are very beautiful.

Yes we believe the Buddha is infallible. His Dhammapada is full of wisdom. My beliefs in Buddha and His Teachings already make me a believer or follower.

So you lean to atheism, and karma and rebirth. Good to know. That and no longer needing Baha'ull'ah. Buddhists don't believe in him. Congratulations.
