I've seen the five pointed star used in several applications with regard to religion or practice, from the five wounds of Christ in Christianity (many in the south adorn their house with one), to the elements in Neo-Paganism (the pentagram), to the five points of felicity in Freemasonry (also the pentagram), to Sigil of Baphomet in the Church of Satan.

Technically it's 7 points on a Sheriff's badge
An upside down 7 pointed star means supersatanic, also known as the hard-left path.Technically it's 7 points on a Sheriff's badge
If the 5th point is at the top, you are correct. What is "Pagan nature worship"? Do I win Jeopardy, Alex?

It means a star with one less side that a six sided star and one more side than a four sided star.
It's an American fast food restaurant. Only those who have been to the US for awhile would get it. No worries.Who?

Because food is more important than a bunch of "edgy teenagers"?Seriously, that was the first thing that popped into my head.
It depends upon the region. I'm lived all over the US from coast to coast but mostly in the South. Pretty common around these parts.Technically, yup, I was wrong. And I bow in your general direction...
seriously though, it's 7 points here. But as a few have pointed out ( no pun intended ), 7 points are less common for S.O. badges.
If it is right side up, it is the placement of spirit over earthly things (Top point: spirit, followed w/air, fire, water, earth). Whereas point down (like w/Baphomet), is placing Earthly needs, over Spirit. Neither is incorrect, they are just used in different ways.
Edit: I typically combine the two, w/their respective interpretations into a unifying symbol called a Decagram (10 point star)
