Is that a crime? Hindsight is 20/20. Not that I was there but if reading about Christ on the cross makes it cleared to see...I see no harm. And it's logical that it needed to be concealed, since, if the Pharisees and everybody else knew Christ was prophesied to be crucified would they have still done it? Yet still necessary to be visible in "hindsight" to convince people Christ was the Messiah, to those who were willing to see it and believe.
They didn't do it. Pilate was the one who crucified Jesus and he himself confessed that truth by nailing the reason why Jesus was crucified on the top of his cross: INRI. It means that Jesus was crucified on a political charge of insurrection for having allowed his disciples to acclaim him king of the Jews at the entrance of Jerusalem. (Luke 19:37-40) The Pharisees rather tried to rescue him from being arrested by asking him to stop his disciples of their nonsense. Jesus was probably enjoying the parade because his answer to the Pharisees was that, if he stopped them the stones would cry out. Well, the Pharisees must have said among themselves. At least, we warned him. It didn't help. Soon afterwards, Jesus was arrested and taken to the cross.
