What is the most powerful emotion?

it depends on the person as most are saying. the power of emotions depend on the "amount" of attention/awareness you give to them. by the themselve, they have no power at all & merely exist.

it's like saying one song on a ipod is louder than the other. in the end, the listener controls the volume of each song and determines how loud he wants each of them to be.

When my daughter was born in front of me I completely lost it.
I don't know exactly what emotion that was .

Super intense joy?

Love. As Sunstone stated, altruistic love is the most powerful.

Fear, however, comes in as a pretty close second.

Take love for instance: though generally a positive influence, it can also turn into a negative one. People in love occasionally throw their entire futures away because of it. Teenagers in 'love', for instance, can be infatuated to the point where they neglect their studies. People in the office, similarly, can underperform in work because of a developing relationship.

It is not as simple as drawing a clear-cut line between 'good' and 'bad' when it comes to emotions.

Thanks a lot.

Altruistic love. It is said to be the first born of reality-truth and in it are all other objects, including gods.

Love is easily the strongest emotion. Love is strong enough to over power our biological nature, make us do things we wouldn't normally do, can make the hardest of struggles easier, can brighten a dark day, it has drives and dictates large portions of societies, it exstacy and bliss, pain and hurt in one package, and what other emotion will have people sacrifice themselves for another? If there is a human soul, love is indeed a part of it.
Fear comes in second, as it cannot touch those who are strong in will and pure in spirit.

What is the most powerful emotion? No right or wrong answers just fire away.

Personally I view Love as the most powerful emotion. It can either result in large amounts of joy and happiness and make people do things that they wouldn't usually do (in the good way). On the flip side love can also breed unrivalled sadness and sorrow when taken away/ not received.

What do you guys (and girls :p) think?

I think that emotions are all part of the same continuum, that there is essentially only one emotion.

All the emotions we describe, fear, anger, love, excitement, are all descriptions of situational raw emotion, that is, specific manifestations of the same fundamental thing. So when it comes to asking which is the most powerful, I think it’s wrong to investigate it as if one emotion was separate from another in some fundamental way, each competing for this title. Rather it will be a question about this person as an individual, and what for that person taps into the emotional response the most. I think it’s a question that on one side has evolutionary explanation, explaining the general similarities we all have, with conditioned emotional responses for certain important situations like danger and reproduction. In an evolutionary sense one could define most powerful in those terms.

Equally subtleties in emotional ‘power’ will be contingent on the individual, his/her life events and experiences. In a way if someone feels or appears to have ‘fear’ as their most powerful emotion, that will say more about that person’s life experiences than anything fundamental about fear itself.

Another aspect of power might be what control such states have over the individual as an autonomous being, and how much of a slave or master you are to your emotions in any given situation. Additionally power might be defined in terms of productivity, and how success and achievement is driven by any such emotion.

Ignorance. But some people would say that ignorance is the outcome of fear. I don't know if this is true for everyone but it is powerful if anyone has ever run into it.

Sometimes I think anger is the most powerful because it so often overpowers our other emotions and logic, making us do things we either don't realize we're capable of or things we wish afterward we had never done.

In a non-contemplative life, running from fear and chasing pleasure seem to be the primary motivators of most behavior. Contemplatives tend to mess with that dynamic enough that it becomes possible for other, stranger emotions such as agape to predominate. The first major, life-altering decision I made was not to make important choices based on fear. So far so good.

It is love because love made me do things, good things that I never thought I was capable of doing. hate has brought me nothing, just dead end. love is the most powerful thing. it can make you a better person and not just in words. it can make you rise above your shortcomings and actually accomplish feats you never thought of before. you have to experience it though. it has an overwhelming power. hate has power too but it keeps things stale, leads to nowhere. it keeps you back. from that viewpoint, yes love is the biggest force.

Thanks a lot.

Love is the most powerful-and we all have Love in common-no coincidence in that my friends-Love really can move insurmountable obstacles-but not always immovable objects hehehee->reminds me of this infamous anecdote: Sam Kinneson(RIP): "Women come up to me all the time saying;(whiny) "Why do you say bad things about women, why do you pick on women? How come you never pick on men? hmmm?.."
Sam Kinneson's screamingly screaming reply: Because a man never made me want to drive MY f***in car into a f****n Tree!!!oh-oh-ohhhh!!!! :run:

Fear is the most powerful emotion. It is a hold over to our animal roots and is a very primitive emotion that many others stem from. Hate is merely a bi-product of fear. I suppose Love could be equally powerful as it is also a primitive emotion going back to our animal past.
