What is the purpose of religion?

So Jesus (pbuh) and Judaism get to decide?

No, we decide individually and collectively. The teachings of Jesus and Moses provide some useful principals that I believe address the purpose of religion, as no doubt Muhammad and the prophet of my religion do. However we can not impose our beliefs or religion on another person.

Religion has become a hindrance rather than a help.

I think it would be better to say religion has become a hindrance for you in your quest to find purpose and meaning. That's is not everyone's experience of religion.

Except in a historical context, religion has been more of a hindrance upon society than a help.

It may be better for you to hear me say those words but i cannot.
Religion no longer holds the keys of life.
You nor anyone else can learn the purpose of life from the teachings of modern day religion.

I'd suggest that "anyone else" can seek to find the answers to existence and be open to the findings of spiritual searching and exploration.

So if I, as an individual, decide that a religion is a true religion, it counts as a true religion?

Of course not, but each of us need to independantly investigate the truth for ourselves rather than blindly imitating the faith of our forefathers.

What is the purpose of religion or your world view?

To get us started, I share one of the purposes of the Baha'i Faith:

Religion, writes Bahá’u’lláh, is “the chief instrument for the establishment of order in the world, and of tranquillity amongst its peoples.

“Is not the object of every Revelation,” He asks, “to effect a transformation in the whole character of mankind, a transformation that shall manifest itself, both outwardly and inwardly, that shall affect both its inner life and external conditions?

The Purpose of Religion | What Bahá’ís Believe

Psychological and physical control of the masses, like that used by the church and Islam.

Of course there are other religions that are not enforced or don't proselytize that are not controlling anyone but still a way of unity.

I am opposed to lying for domination. Shouldn't everybody be such?

I think it is OK to say, "I don't know".

I think that to say, "this is the way it is because I say so!" is what is wrong with the World.

I wonder how you have jumped to that conclusion?
Did I say that I am opposed to religion?

You seemed to imply it. The statements below for example.

am opposed to lying for domination. Shouldn't everybody be such?

Sure.

think it is OK to say, "I don't know".

It is.

think that to say, "this is the way it is because I say so!" is what is wrong with the World.

It is wrong to impose religion on anyone, but is that the main problem in the world today?

I think that lying for domination is the main problem.

Maybe it is. Religion used inspire and encourage peole to do great things. It is as if the light of religion has been eclipsed by the dark side of human nature.

Oh, I quite agree. But you implied that only certain religions, those that were founded by or are closely associated with certain key figures, e.g. Krsna, Moses (pbuh), Jesus (pbuh), Muhammad (pbuh), Baha'u'llaah, count as true religions...
