What Is Your Opinion Of Cars That Go 70+ MPH?

I believe that car manufactures and the U.S have a scam going.

It is illegal to drive over 70-80 MPH on most the U.S highways.

Car companies purposefully manufacture cars that are based on the consumers criteria as opposed to the laws.

If car manufactures were made to make cars that were governed at 70-90 MPH. There would possibly be more study into how to make a car more efficient inside those parameters as opposed to the parameters that exist.

I say there is a scam, and I don't mean it as a conspiracy, just a conundrum.

That's the only reason they won't unleash civil attorneys war to sue the pants
off car makers when speeding drivers commit carnage on the highways.

Not everywhere has speed limits. I feel safe on the autobahn and like to be able to cover 100 miles in an hour if I want to.

Perhaps, in the case of an emergency, we want to make good time to the hospital or something? but I agree... we just had a teen killed last weekend - driving too fast, it was really sad, the whole neighborhood's upset. - http://ourtribune.com/article.php?id=14282

I think truckers have something they can put on their trucks that keep them under a certain limit? When our kids get older and get a car, I might rig it so that it can't go over 55 or something.

The maximum speed limit here in Idaho is 75MPH as it is in many US States. see Speed Limits In order for a vehicle to safely travel at that speed it has to be designed to exceed that limit. In some states years ago it was "Safe and Prudent". I remember back in 1972 I had a 68 Dodge Charger, its speedometer went to 150MPH. I remember going on leave from CA to Idaho, it was about 1AM and I was in Nevada traveling at about 100+MPH. A car pulled up along side me, then rapidly pulled away it was a Nevada State trooper.

Cars are already made to be efficient within those parameters. You don't want to max out performance at 70 miles per hour and drive that way for three hours. Your engine will explode. Cars are built to drive highway speed limits comfortably. Also, if you want good gas mileage, you will want a car that can do 70 at around 2000 RPM give or take a few hundred, but it still needs to perform well at 3000 to 4000 RPM for acceleration. This means, in order to maintain decent performance under acceleration, most cars will have the potential to go 20 to 30 miles over the max speed limit. A lot of manufacturers do limit the actual speed of the vehicle, but it has nothing to do with added efficiency at highway speeds.

I used to have a Subaru WRX/STi and the thing did 0-100km (0-61mph) in 4 seconds. In second gear I was past 100km/h. This car was absolutely incredible on the corners and handled like a dream. I felt like I was driving a racecar, but you know what was wrong with the picture? It was literally a race car.

I had to always watch my speed as a little too much gas on the throttle would put me over the speed limit by figures like 30km/h. It got to the point where I was questioning myself as to why exactly do people buy these cars?

Why not focus on 0-60mph feats and not top end speeds of 175mph?? It makes no sense to buy a vehicle that can out run police officers.

Although extremely fun, it also takes A LOT of maturity to drive these types of vehicles. And unfortunately because I am in Canada and I am only 21, my insurance was through the roof. Even though I have never had a speeding ticket and hardly ever speed, I still got pulled over by cops on a daily basis. There excuse was "the cars too loud" or "just checking up on things." It really would make more sense to buy a car that accelerates quicker but doesn't go over 110km/h.

What if we had buttons on the vehicle that allowed us to cruise at certain speeds (kind of like cruise control). Buttons that went from 10, 20, 30, 40..all the way up to 110. So when you go on the highway you just press the button you want to cruise at and it goes (press on the brake and it disengages). Now I am sure a lot of vehicle enthusiasts wouldn't like that idea but it seems like a more logical way of going about things.

The topic of the thread is cars being manufactured for speed. I know that. When I read the titled I thought "I don't like when cars drive up to the toll booth going 70". It scares me. And I don't like when they pass me left and right. Rant over.
