What movies do you like and why?

Seeking the middle path..
I'm a movie buff. Not a go-to-the-theater-every-Saturday type, but still a movie buff. It's a social media that existed before the Internet because it gave people a common perspective to discuss.

Did you like or hate "It's a Wonderful Life"? Why?

Were you a John Wayne or Clint Eastwood fan? Why?

Did the "Star Wars" movies move you or not?

Although I rarely go to the movie theater, my girl friend and I love to watch movies from Netflix.

Tonight we're watching "The Help". We both read the book and have waited several months for it to show up on our mailbox. Great movie. A bit different from the book, but that's expected when condensing 8-10 hours of reading into a 2.5 hour movie.

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
I enjoy a wide range of movies. Right now I'm taking a little Netflix break to check RF, because I noticed that we are being pelted by sheets of rain and I needed a little stretch, so I paused the movie, got up and looked outside, and decided to check and see what's happening on RF before getting back to the movie.

I'm watching "The Tower" tonight, which is a documentary series from the UK about the history of the Tower of London. It's pretty cool.

I love me some Netflix. I usually watch a movie or documentary every night. I rarely turn on "real" TV. I'm sort of on a UK tear right now because my daughter is moving to England and I'm planning a trip there later in the fall. Just finished up watching all 38 episodes of "The Tudors," which was FANTASTIC.

I really liked "The Help" by the way.

I enjoy just about any movie that makes me feel like I'm IN the movie - whether it's historical, fictional, past, present or future. For instance, I really loved Bladerunner (future), Natural Born Killers (present day), Braveheart (Dark Ages), Full Metal Jacket (Viet Nam era), The Bounty (18th century) the bio series of John Adams (18th century), and the Lord of the Rings series (who knows what time period!). I liked all of those movies specifically because they place the viewer IN the movie, so to speak. They are very evocative.

I am really picky about quality - quality of photography, music, acting, sets, clothing, etc. Often a movie with a substandard plot can win me over if it is excellent artistically. And I adore a great script. Lonesome Dove and Juno and Pulp Fiction are three films that come to mind immediately when I think of excellent scripts.

I loved the music in The Bounty, Bagdad Cafe, and Little Voice, to name a few that jumped out at me.

From a visually rich POV, I really liked Amelie, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Whale Rider, and Out of Africa.

Speaking of Out of Africa - I've never seen a Meryl Streep movie I didn't adore. What an actress!

I prefer Clint Eastwood's later stuff over his earlier stuff. Don't much care for most John Wayne movies.

I despise "It's A Wonderful Life." I really detest kitschy, predictable movies.

Now - back to the Tower of London!

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
I enjoy international and independent films. Billy Jack , Run Lola Run, The Bunker, No Mans Land, Das Boot, Holy Head aka The Head, Happiness of the Katakuris, and an absolute slew of Asian horror flicks.

It's only on DVD, but Netflix also has Horatio Hornblower: The New Adventures with Ioan Gruffudd. Veddy good!

I will definitely have to check that out. I love the whole Tall Ships era. I have an ancestor who rode with Captain Cook on the Endeavor.

An excellent assessment. I didn't get it either.

I liked the ridiculously named Dirty Dancing; a drama about a young girl's moral awakening and courageous idealism in the face of convention and social pressure.

So I'd like to turn my brain off for a bit, or maybe kick it in an interesting direction although movies that do this for me are far and few in between, and option #1 is generally the safest bet.

I like black comedies.

Catch 22
Dr. Strangelove
In Bruges
Layer Cake
Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels
Office Space
Snatch
The Guard
Wag the Dog

I also like geopolitical thrillers, the more paranoid the better, especially the old cold war vibey ones. Am shamefully a sucker for the secret agent / spy / assassin / lolwat junk too. I did say turn brain off.

Fail Safe
Seven Days in May
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
The Fourth Protocol
The Spy Who Came In From the Cold
Topaz
Twilight's Last Gleaming
-
Bourne Trilogy
Flannen & Citroen
Lucky Number Slevin
Spy Game
The Sum of All Fears
Traitor

Aside from that, some others that rang my bell:

2001: A Space Odyssey
Being There
K-PAX
Ran
The Dear Hunter
The International
The Thin Red Line
Wings of Desire

Given the above tendencies, please suggest movie(s) you think I will enjoy. It has become increasingly difficult to find something that I don't feel like turning off after 20 minutes.

Thanks! :p

Can't brain. Has dumb.
Where to start?

I like films that make me think. These ones are particularly interesting as I see aspects within these films that mirror certain parts of my own beliefs and thoughts, in different ways:
Butterfly Effect
Mr. Nobody
Inception
Ink
Stranger Than Fiction
The Fountain
Waking Life
V for Vendetta
What Dreams May Come

Others I really enjoyed:
Amelie
Blow
Chocolat
Good Will Hunting
Far From Heaven
Forrest Gump
Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Moon
Once Were Warriors
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Sweeney Todd
The Boondock Saints (also Boondock Saints 2: All Saint's Day)
The Bucket List
The Crow
Most, if not all Disney movies
Same goes for Pixar

A few tear-jerkers never go amiss either:
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
Prayers for Bobby

Patch Adams has been a big inspiration to me, since I saw it when I was about 12 or 13. Was a vivid depiction of what I thought medicine, doctors and nurses should be striving towards. I want to develop this idea as a reality for myself, with certain changes.

I've probably left out many films, but this might give a general idea of what I like to watch :D

Did you like or hate "It's a Wonderful Life"? Why?

I always get that and "Life is Beautiful" confused just by name. But I think both are wonderful movies, not the kind I watch repeatedly.

Did the "Star Wars" movies move you or not?
Yes, although my kids will grow up believing there are only 3

What is movies do you like and why?
Well my favorite movie is Fight Club, directed by my favorite director David Fincher. I saw it Freshmen year of High School and still haven't gotten it all figured out. It is a fantastic satire that looks at just how absurd life is, which makes sense since it is existential. It really looks into how bad an existential crisis can go, the appeal of Fascism for a greater good (which is a negative thing in real life if you want my opinion), not to mention much symbolism many miss. It really shows what happens when people take decent philosophy and take it to the negative extremes.

My second favorite movie is probably Watchmen, based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore and directed by Zack Snyder. I like the movie simply because of how deep the source material is, and I think the movie's ending was infinitely better than the book (apologies to Alan Moore, I love you). It is one of the deepest philosophical stories I have ever seen in fiction, as well as a critique on many things including superheroes. It touches on retributivism, utilitarianism, time, morality, determinism, absolute power, the existence of God, the nature of God if one exists, the nature on humanity, etc etc etc. I could talk about Watchmen all day, I use examples from it constantly, and I have written several papers on it for philosophy and psychology classes.

Third would probably be David Fincher's adaption of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I liked the book but the movie was much better in my opinion. Larsson likes to drag on. As stated, Fincher is my favorite director so I am biased. But I am extremely interested in serial killers (majoring in criminal psychology), and all the closed room mystery, corruption, revenge, etc was highly enjoyable. It really shows humanity at our darkest. I have always been drawn to reality and such rather than the feel good films. Plus, it was the most perfectly cast movie I think I have ever seen.

From here on out, no specific order.

Se7en, directed by David Fincher again. Another serial killer movie, and the best one I have ever seen soley based on the serial killer aspect. It is also a deep critique of religion, again how things can be used equally for good or bad (like Fight Club). Well acted, Morgan Freeman is always wonderful. Very dark and disturbing, just like I like it.

Inception, directed by Christopher Nolan. Not much needs to be said if you have seen it. Just amazingly original, Nolan is quite an amazing filmmaker. Nothing to really blow your mind away, more like twist it up. Also the acting is superb.

More include Shutter Island, Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream, The Night Listener, The Dark Knight Trilogy (so psyched for TDKR), Almost Famous, Lord of the Rings, Memento, The Number 23, Airplane!, Zoolander.

I like movies that don't hold back. Even like Number 23 which was by no means fantastic, the attempt was amazing. My style is the movies that make you think, that you can watch hundreds of times, that don't edit out reality. That is why Zoolander being one of my favorites throws people off hahaahhaha.

Star Wars series, Scream series, Child's Play series, Grease, High School Musical trilogy, the Time Machine, Jurassic Park, Matilda, and most any Disney movie.

In short, a nice healthy variety.

Matilda has been a fav since childhood. Its kinda stuck.

Did you like or hate "It's a Wonderful Life"? Why?

Yes, I like it but I never watch it all the way through anymore. I've just seen it too many times. I typically catch a bit of it every Christmas. Since you just about have to if you watch any TV during that time. Much like A Christmas Story, which I still love.

Were you a John Wayne or Clint Eastwood fan? Why?

I like them both, but definitely like Clint more. His movies were much more visceral and realistic. I still watch a bunch of John Wayne movies when they come on like True Grit, Sons of Katy Elder, and a few others. The stories are pretty good if you enjoy westerns, and the Duke is the Duke. None of these hold a candle to the man with no name trilogy, of course.

Did the "Star Wars" movies move you or not?

I grew up with them, so definitely. I really liked the originals and I can tolerate the new ones to a certain degree. They are pretty fun swashbuckling action flicks which always float my boat. They got a bit silly with trying to explain too much in the newer ones though. They should have been left as a bare bones action adventure good vs. evil kind of story.

What is movies do you like and why?

I like just about everything, but I watch terrible movies more than anything else. I love to laugh at bad acting and bad scripting and bad special effects and all of that. Check out Troll 2 if you feel like torturing yourself. It is by far the most incomprehensibly bad movie there has ever been. And I've seen a lot.

Troll 2 (1990) - IMDb

I enjoy a lot of foreign cinema (I'm an American) especially Chinese and Korean movies. They seem to be unshackled by a lot of cliches that we seem to get around here. Not that they don't have their own, maybe its just different than what I'm used to. I can't stand dubs, I need subtitles so I can get a handle on the actors emotions. Good ones I've seen recently are Kung Fu Hustle, Red Cliff, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Election, and The Good, the Bad, and the Weird. I watched all three of the original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo movies from Sweden and they were absolutely outstanding. All of these are on Netflix by the way :)

For American movies, I like particular actors and generally like the movies they are in, just for their performance. People like Gary Oldman, Edward Norton, Robert Deneiro, Anthony Hopkins. Lots of others. Same with particular directors like Zack Snyder, Kevin Smith, John Favreau, Judd Apatow.
