Did you like or hate "It's a Wonderful Life"? Why?
I always get that and "Life is Beautiful" confused just by name. But I think both are wonderful movies, not the kind I watch repeatedly.
Did the "Star Wars" movies move you or not?
Yes, although my kids will grow up believing there are only 3
What is movies do you like and why?
Well my favorite movie is Fight Club, directed by my favorite director David Fincher. I saw it Freshmen year of High School and still haven't gotten it all figured out. It is a fantastic satire that looks at just how absurd life is, which makes sense since it is existential. It really looks into how bad an existential crisis can go, the appeal of Fascism for a greater good (which is a negative thing in real life if you want my opinion), not to mention much symbolism many miss. It really shows what happens when people take decent philosophy and take it to the negative extremes.
My second favorite movie is probably Watchmen, based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore and directed by Zack Snyder. I like the movie simply because of how deep the source material is, and I think the movie's ending was infinitely better than the book (apologies to Alan Moore, I love you). It is one of the deepest philosophical stories I have ever seen in fiction, as well as a critique on many things including superheroes. It touches on retributivism, utilitarianism, time, morality, determinism, absolute power, the existence of God, the nature of God if one exists, the nature on humanity, etc etc etc. I could talk about Watchmen all day, I use examples from it constantly, and I have written several papers on it for philosophy and psychology classes.
Third would probably be David Fincher's adaption of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I liked the book but the movie was much better in my opinion. Larsson likes to drag on. As stated, Fincher is my favorite director so I am biased. But I am extremely interested in serial killers (majoring in criminal psychology), and all the closed room mystery, corruption, revenge, etc was highly enjoyable. It really shows humanity at our darkest. I have always been drawn to reality and such rather than the feel good films. Plus, it was the most perfectly cast movie I think I have ever seen.
From here on out, no specific order.
Se7en, directed by David Fincher again. Another serial killer movie, and the best one I have ever seen soley based on the serial killer aspect. It is also a deep critique of religion, again how things can be used equally for good or bad (like Fight Club). Well acted, Morgan Freeman is always wonderful. Very dark and disturbing, just like I like it.
Inception, directed by Christopher Nolan. Not much needs to be said if you have seen it. Just amazingly original, Nolan is quite an amazing filmmaker. Nothing to really blow your mind away, more like twist it up. Also the acting is superb.
More include Shutter Island, Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream, The Night Listener, The Dark Knight Trilogy (so psyched for TDKR), Almost Famous, Lord of the Rings, Memento, The Number 23, Airplane!, Zoolander.
I like movies that don't hold back. Even like Number 23 which was by no means fantastic, the attempt was amazing. My style is the movies that make you think, that you can watch hundreds of times, that don't edit out reality. That is why Zoolander being one of my favorites throws people off hahaahhaha.
