what religion am i closest to?

i am having a hard time classifying my religious beliefs (not that they neccesarily need classified, more curious than anything). i have mostly christian beliefs with a few exceptions. just a few:

* i don't believe in the virgin birth concept
* i believe Jesus was more of a messanger of God than the literal Son of God
* i don't believe in having to sit in a church to worship. this can be done anywhere
* i'm very conflicted on what happens when we die. part of me thinks that no Father (no matter how horrible their child was) would ever damn them to hell for eternity. that being said, if we are to take the Word as is... if there's a Heaven, then there is a hell.
* most importantly, i believe there are exceptions to every Rule. On a very personal note, I have had to take a life (in self defense of course) while in the military and am more than ok with the thought of "them or me". just as i would never look down on someone for stealing food to feed their family (and i wouldn't consider them or i a sinner)

any insight would be appreciated

hmmm...

In my opinion, you don't have to classify it. I started a thread yesterday about simply following good moral beliefs. That's your best bet, and it sounds like you are already doing this.

As far as some of your points, I think most people have a few doubts. No one knows for sure what happens after life. And of course there are exceptions to every rule.

Happy Hunting, but just follow your instincts!

thanks. i agree that being an overall good person is the path to follow, but is there a religion that my "beliefs" put me closer to?

  • You believe in God, or a Supreme Being.
  • You do not believe in miracles such as virgin birth or the divinity of Jesus.
  • You are not sure if there is an afterlife, but you cannot imagine a Supreme Being creating a Hell.
  • You do not believe in the strict laws and questionable moral guidelines presented in the Bible, or any other reveled revelation.

Deism?

Anyway, it is not necessary to label yourself unless you are completely comfortable with the label. Don't "seek a religion", just find your beliefs.

Here is an interesting quiz.

Answer the questions and it will give you a list of religions that you might want to consider.

i took that quiz and evidentally i answered 100% towards Unitarian Universalism. looks like i have some homework to do.

1. Unitarian Universalism (100%)

If you got a library to go to, I would suggest checking out Neale Donald Walsh's Conversations with God.

Now I have to tell you that almost everyone who takes this quiz get Unitarian Universalism as the top answer or at least in the top 5. This is likely because the UU’s are a very open and very broad minded organization. There are some very intelligent UU’s on this board who would be happy to talk with you about it. But I would recommend that you take a look at the top five, or even the top 10 answers on your list and think about them.

You might want to look into Quakerism too.

My results from the heavily advert mobbed quiz thingy;
1. Mahayana Buddhism (100%) 2. Liberal Quakers (95%) 3. Unitarian Universalism (91%)

Erm, sort of, but not really.
