What's so horrible about unions?

They don't seem like horrible entities (good benefits and salaries for their workers), so why are they often demonized?
Problems I've seen on occasion in my experience with union workers:
- They'll use violence to enforce their goals, even against their own members.
- A culture of caring only about their members, even the dead wood.
- Their painfully slow work pace.
- Union leadership wasting funds.
- Their preference to be on the dole rather than take non-union work when unemployed.
- Short term thinking, eg, milking a company til it closes its doors.

Unions are a socialist concept where they believe all workers should be equal. They hold back the productive employees and support the mediocre worker.

When I had my business, some workers were worth 3 times what others where.

I have seen unions accept contracts that were good for the current membership but sold their future union brothers and sisters down the road.

Many employers are greedy, but so are many union members.

In good times, companies should share the bounty and many times do not. In bad times, the unions should take concessions but many times do not.

If there where no unions, workers get the shaft, but many a union has bled a company dry and forced them to close.

No one here holds the monopoly on greed.

surely unions are good for the workers, but maybe not so good for the bosses.

can't see why people who earn good money have the gall to complain about them.

No discussion of unions would be complete without this:

..it may be from the 80s, and English, but every bit as wonderful now as it was then.

If people fear the government there will be tyranny, if the government fears the people, there will be liberty.

Replace government with authority entity as you please.

Throwing generalisations aside, unions are both a blessing, but also a curse. Something they do the right things, other times they make me want to murder the whole bunch of them.
