Whats the point in life?

The purpose of life as the bible tells us has only one meaning!
To decide if you are a servent of GOD or satan.
In the first Earth age it was split. 1/3 following satan and the other 2/3 following GOD.
He made us all come through the flesh and suffer the pains of life so we could ourselves decide if we are good or Evil.
You sound like me! Many things have made you wish you had answers now.
The answers are in the letter GOD wrote you! The Bible.
Have faith, He will not forsake you.
I am new and don't know my way around this site yet, but I did give my real Email address if you need someone to talk to.

It's late so I'll be quick. I'm an Atheist I'm afraid, so where does that leave me regarding my role in the whole GOD/satan thing? As for the point of life? Tears, laughter, stories, anger, love, hate, confusion, greed, kindness, understanding, progress, empathy, sadness, happiness, sex, adrenaline... okay I suppose it's obvious I could list, well, everything we can comprehend so far (if I could) and it still would not encompass the absolutely wonderful fact that we are conscious and able to engage in this type of discussion with one another.

Cheers!

Sorry, just read lycan's post which sort of conveyed the same idea I tried to. Didn't mean to be a sneaky idea thief lol.

The point of life is different for each of us,
as we all attend to our own inter-locking aspect of purpose.

The point of my life is to be what it is, that I am,
fully actualized and conscious,
within a three dimensional reality.

Consciousness is that bubble, we mold our world around.

ah well, you asked

Inasmuch as we humans have pretty much created ourselves, the purpose of our lives is to be good and seek virtue.

I say that as an Atheist.

I was brought up as a Christian but it was not until I freed myself from the empty beliefs of Christianity, the vanity of an individual seeking to have salvation and eternal life, that I was able to realize that it was wrong to be racist, that it was wrong to be anti-Semitic, that it was wrong and stupid to hate and fear those who are different because of their sexual orientation, ethnicity, religious beliefs, etc., and ad infinitum, that it was wrong to be anti-women, things that my Christian faith totally failed to teach me.

All it drummed into my head was faithfulness to an uncaring God in order that I might be saved and have eternal life. What empty, worthless beliefs!

I agree, th ebest we can do as modern humans is try and keep things ticking over nicely. And if you ever feel life is pointless, dont worry, it is, but at least we are lucky enough to be here to observe the pointless beauty of our lives. (And its nice to have a bit of fun now and then as well)

Peace x (Please fogive the randomness of this post, I havnt kept up to date)

The point of life is to make a change in the lives of others. If we cannot make any sort of change in the lives around us then we are unimprotaint and unneeded; even if the change is for the worse then it is still change. Concerning your question Jewscout; the point of death is the same. If your dying changes the lives of others at all ---again in either a good way or not--- then it has a meaning.

Everything was created because the option was nothing, and that was unnacceptable to God.

Now despite what religion says, everything was not created perfect. Perfection is the goal but it will take a lot of time. Something God has plenty of.

Your purpose is exactly this, whatever you choose it to be. If you manage a McDonalds then that is your purpose. If you sit on a street corner with a sign asking for money then that is your purpose.

God didn't build all of this and give you absolute free will to then just force you into a certain job.

I think it would be nice if God would at least check in on me from time to time. But then, maybe He is and I'm not listening.

Agent Smith from the Matrix stated that the purpose of life is to inevitably end. I say that we decide our own purpose. I don't think we are here for any particular reason. Life as we know it exists by chance (I think). Just enjoy your life you have hear and make the most of the friends and family you have. If you want to find meaning and purpose, go to a soup kitchen and get a better appreciation and perspective for your life. Tommorrow, the life you know could be over. Enjoy it today.

From the Book of Mormon:

Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy (2 Nephi 2:25).

Sums it up for me in a nutshell. :)

Hi Ori,

To me the point of life, is to learn to be the best you can be and experience as much as you can by helping others along the way.

It's finding your own unique talents and then sharing them with others. In you, lies the potential of God, the ability to create. So create yourself a little miracle. Recognise that you mean a lot to someone else and their life would be pretty empty without you. I firmly belief that when you dishonour yourself, you dishonour god.

Everyone of us is special in our own way. When you're having a down moment, it's just to remind you to celebrate the good times and experience them to the full.

Our thoughts create our own reality, you can either sit there and be miserable or you can go out and have a blast. So many people spend their lives wishing they could have, should have.... don't join them.

There's no yesterdays, no tomorrows, all we have is today the present. It's a gift to enable you to make the most of it.

Smile, and realise you can be, do and have anything you want in life.... you just gotta work at it.

It is a state that Bertrand Russell (atheist/philosopher/mathematician) called "unyielding despair." I'm not unfamiliar with it. There were even times I thought about "taking the easy way out." Looking back, I now I describe it as a sense of being all alone, being disconnected from the web of life and the natural consequence of life without religion. (By "religion," I don't mean belief in a Big Daddy in the sky. Beliefs are the form, the conceptual interpretation of connectedness, not religion.)
“A human being is a part of this whole, called by us ‘Universe’, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest - a kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to apportion for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.” Albert Einstein
And that is the task of religion, not what you see on TV or in churches.

Whatever made you think you need to "do something about it"?

Ori,
I think we all struggle from time to time. Try to find something you are really passionate about and spend your time doing that. Do not be alone all the time. Get out of the house and amoung other people. Your the only one who can get yourself out of a rut we all sometimes get into. You can do it.... I have faith Good luck and I wish you well. Take care of you.

I think our sense of purpose comes from evolution. We are complex social creatures and each person plays an important role in the community. Having a strong sense of purpose in each individual might help a community survive and prosper better than others. Also, the individual who has a strong purpose will be more likely to be accepted and cared for by the community. You can see the pattern among other social creatures too. Like on the show Meerkat Manor there is a meerkat for the leader, some who takes care of the young, some who watches guard, some scouts for food, they all work together. As each one dies or gets kicked out their purposes change to fill in the gaps. Humans have evolved even more and we have civilization. We work together so well that we now have some time on our hands to ponder our predicament. We have time to do something more than just survive. Our standard of living is much better than it was a few thousand years ago. It's no longer enough to simply survive long enough to pass on the genes and help the next generation to do the same. We search for a purpose that is more self satisfying. We want a purpose that is grand, nobel, important. We want happiness, success, fortune, fame, entertainment, pleasure, satisfaction, everything. Some people may confuze these things with our instinct for purpose, but our purpose hasn't changed. I think some people take the instinct too far. They think that if their purpose isn't grandiose or self gratifying that they have no reason for living. Are you really not satisfying your purpose or are you just not happy with the purpose you have right now? If you want a different purpose you can change rolls just like the meerkats. That's what I'm doing. Within the past four years I divorced my first wife, became and atheist, got married to the woman of my dreams, got a good job and doubled my pay, moved to a better community, and will be going back to school this fall for a complete carrer change. My purpose will probably change as life changes. Eventually I will probably have kids and grandkids and I might choose to devote myself to them quite a bit. The instinct of purpose is given to you by your genes and probably culture and enviornment too, but the actual purpose of life is something you can give to yourself, if you don't like the one your parents or community are trying to make you do. Aren't you glad you're not assigned an unchangeable purpose from birth?
