Are you all talking about the new hollywood version of the ring with Sarah Michelle Gellar? I didn't like that version either, but the original Japanese version Ju-On was pretty creepy.

OK, we've been through this song and dance before, and I've actually seen the movie this time :D. So...which character was played by Sarah Michelle Gellar? Sine I've actually seen the movie, I'll be able to put a face with an actor's name for the first time when I don't know him on this list :jiggy:

My husband always tries to make me watch cheesy Doctor Who movies. The costumes are rediculous, the plots are long, convoluted and predictable, but it can be pretty funny to laugh at. They should have them on Mystery Science theater.
Bear in mind that Doctor Who holds the record as the longest running sci-fi series in the world. There have only been two movies made. While each storyline is released on a single video or dvd, the episodes in the series were a half hour long, and it was a weekly series, so every episode had to end on a 'cliffhanger' to get the viewer to watch the next show. The formula obviously worked, because it ran for 26 years. Considering it started in 1963, when science fiction was not considered a profitable genre by the BBC, and had a tiny budget, even by the standards of the day, it did bloody well to run for so long. If it hadn't been getting viewers sucked in enough to keep watching (and therefore making money for the BBC), you can be sure they'd have canned it. By today's standards, yes, it's old, yes, it's cheesy - but it's difficult to create quality props and sets when you've got no money to play with, and digital imagery is not even a spec on the radar. Take a look back at early Star Trek episodes - they were hardly quality stuff. Then remember that Dr. Who preceded that show by three years, and ran for twenty-three years longer (Star Trek ran from 1966-1969; Dr. Who from 1963-1989). Yes, Star Trek has had infinite spin-offs, but the original series only lasted for three years. I'm not saying that every Dr. Who storyline is exceptional viewing (you can't say that about any series really), but Doctor Who was, and still is, a landmark show. The Doctor Who series is being resurrected (which obviously means there is still a market for it), a new Doctor has been cast (Christopher Eccleston), filming has started, and I for one can't wait to see what they come up with, now that technology has caught up with us, and can do it justice.

As for the topic of the thread, I'd have to say the worst movie I've seen recently is Highlander 2: The Quickening. I watched all of the Highlander movies a few weeks ago, and I could barely sit through the second one...I can't believe I loved it as a teenager. It was truly awful.

The Grudge is the US version of Ju-On with Sarah Michelle Gueller. I have a friend who saw both and he said he likes the Japanese version better, too.
Yeah, I know. I didn't even realize I had written the ring until now. Whatever, I know I meant the Grudge and you know I meant the Grudge, so yeah.

Anywho, I've seen them both too. I saw the US version last week, but I saw Ju-On in the theatres about 6 months ago. The Japanese version was much better. But I will admit that the US version did have a few good creeps in it.

Sorry No*s, I meant the Grudge, not the Ring. I think Sarah's name is Karen in the US version..I'm not sure though.

Yeah, I gathered that from the follow-ups. I haven't seen the Rign, though lol. I think you got the name right there, though. Is it the substitute nurse in the show?

Also, Jeepers Creepers was pretty bad. I never saw the sequel, but the trailer made it look pretty desent. And I heard that Ocean's 12 was a major bomb, I never saw that one either, but that is what I heard.

Yep, completely in Japanese with English subtitles. It's really amazing.

And yeah No*s, she plays the nurse.

Arrrrghh!!! Hate, hate, hate that movie! Andy Garcia dying for no good reason...

Although I liked the overall movie, I thought that "Cold Mountain" needed a very specific warning because of the ending. (I won't put it here, lest I spoil it for anyone.)

member.php?u=1694Majikthise, all good Star Wars fans hate Episode 2. I'm not even a big fan and I admit it sucked.

Haven't seen most of the movies y'all are mentioning...but Blue was pretty bad, and I LOATHED Van Helsing.

i didnt like the grudge because i thought it had a astupid plot, and that gurgling noise was pretty stupid. i mean, there were five year olds in the theatre mocking the movie. it wasnt scary. i hate it because it wasnt scary. a horror film is meant to be scary.

Yeah, the ring was bad. But the grudge was ok. You have to understand Japanese foldklore to be scared though. Its not really an american horror film.
Being mildly familiar with Japanese folklore, I all but jumped out of my skin many times during The Grudge. :D I need to get around to seeing JuOn, the original Japanese version, I heard it was so much better... the extras on The Grudge DVD are neat, too. The director was the guy that did JuOn, and the actors said he'd do crazy stuff like come up and yowl like a cat right behind them. Sounds like a fun guy. :jiggy:

... wow, that got off topic. Worst movie I've seen recently was Van Helsing. I expected a plot and didn't get jack crap. All it was was pretty pictures and vague rambling about what could have been a plot, had it been developed.

Worst ever... hm. I'm not big on watching movies, so I dunno. Probably The Cat in the Hat. I hated it. Dr. Seuss stuff isn't supposed to have a pervy undertone. :(

I may be a bad judge of this since I'm a chicken when it comes to horror movies, but The Grudge was pretty scary to me. The whole boy/cat thing had to do with an old legend about a boy and cat who were murdered at the same time, and their souls merged and became a demon that wandered around and killed people. I can't explain exactly why the movie is scary, honestly. I think it's something you just have to pick up on about Japanese culture.

Solaris...the George Clooney remake. I've never seen the original, but this version was, well, words fail me. I sat through the whole thing hoping that at some point it was going to get better, but knowing that there was no way it was going to happen. Part of my life I'll never get back.
We watched Ju-on first, which I found pretty creepy, but I was somewhat confused as to what was going on at the end. So we got The Grudge in hopes that without the distraction of subtitles it might be more clear. Nup. Of course, I was so tired I fell asleep while watching it, so that probably didn't help either. I'm watching it again now because of this thread.
That little boy and his cat give me the willies.
