White Trash Recipes

Kathryn

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
OK, folks, think COMMON MAN here - no balsamic vinaigrettes, basmati rice, crepes, or steamed ANYTHING!

Share your favorite white trash (or whatever ethnic group you prefer) recipes - you know, the ones your grandmother used to whip up with no written instructions, or the one you ate for two years while you were in college and could only spend $25 a week on food.

Here's my first one:

Fried Fruit Pies

Take a can of bisquits and roll the bisquits out one at a time on your counter top using, of course, a plastic cup because you don't have a rolling pin. Make each one a thin circle of dough.

Put a couple of spoonfuls of any sort of fruit preserves in the middle of each circle. The store brand kind that comes in the little glass jar that you can later use for a drinking glass works just fine.

Heat about 1/2 an inch of oil in a skillet on medium high. NO OLIVE OIL - that would SUCK. Just plain old corn oil works best.

While that's heating up, fold each dough circle in half over the preserves. Pinch the edges together. If you want to get REALLY fancy, you can press them together with the tines of a fork - that makes a really cool edge on each little pie.

Fry each pie till brown and crispy on each side. Drain on a paper towel.

Sprinkle each one with sugar while they are still hot.

Bon appetit!

1) Buy a package of frozen Ore-Ida French fries.

2) Remove from package and fry.

3) Serve with mayonaisse.

Works with tater tots, too.

Brown hamburger.
Add butter.
Add flour.
Brown Roux
Add Milk
Heat and stir till thick.
Serve over bread, oven baked fries, or leftover rice.

Or for breakfast....

Warm milk.
Toast bread.
Break up toast into pan of warm milk.
Add sugar.

Would you believe the above are two of my kids favorite meals?

1 2-lbs hunk of meat (beef, chicken or pork)
sprinkley bits (herbs and spice)
1 crockpot

Place meat in crockpot. Toss on sprinkley bits. Turn on crockpot. Wait 3 hours.

Take the meat out. Cut a sizable portion off, and let the rest cool to go into the fridge.

In a pot boil two cups of water with a beef bouillon cube. Add:

meat cut into small bits
meat drippings (Edit: strained)
2 handfuls of barley
1 large or 2 small carrots, chopped
1 stick of celery, chopped
1/2 onion, chopped (or chopped and fried)
some of those tiny tomatoes
any other left-over vegetables
floatey bits (herbs and spice)

Let simmer for half an hour. Soup's on!

one pack of Ramen noodles (any flavor)
2 hot dogs (the kind made with various meats AKA cheap)
one inch thick slice of Velveeta cheese, cut into cubes
handful of whatever veggies are leftover from last night

Prepare Ramen with as little water as possible. Cook the hot dogs by whatever means you like. Make the veggies hot by any method you like. Slice the cooked hotdogs and veggies into the cooked ramen. Stir in the Velveeta cheese until smooth. Enjoy!
