Short of being outright offensive, do what you like.
I do not plan to be offensive but often outraged people take offence.
I am offended by people wearing hats in-doors, I'm offended by X-Factor type television; I'm offended by many things but ignore them and get on with life. I wish religious sorts would do the same.

Clearly you've never been to a Muslim majority Country.
Am I supposed to assume that somehow those who live there are lying to make their doctrine appear worse than it is, even when that clearly goes against their intents?

Take it from me, someone who has visited several Muslim run Countries, people are free to follow the religion, pray 5 times a day, pray in the Mosque, fast etc or not to do any of those things, and live their lives as non believers. The vast majority of people don't care, and those interfering with 'unwanted' advice are doing so out of concern for their friend/family member.

What, they won't let you depict their prophet or they will let you mock them.
Vast majority of Muslims have no issue with people doing either of those things even if we find it repulsive. We explain why we personally wouldn't do those things, why they cause offence etc, but ultimately people do as they please. Just be mindful of the tiny minority who will take things too far and want you dead. Even law abiding pensioners would lynch you if you were in a position of power and able to remove their health care needs. Other people would knock you out cold if you mocked their mother, wife etc. Point being, everyone has something they feel passionately about. Proceed with caution when stepping over the mark to prove a dumb point.

Hadith explaining why we don't depict living beings:

“Every image maker will be in the Fire.” And he pbuh said: “The most severely punished of people on the Day of Resurrection will be the image-makers, those who tried to imitate the creation of Allah.” And he pbuh said: “The makers of these images will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and they will be told, ‘Give life to that which you have created.’”

There is no problem drawing mountains, trees, planes, cars and the like.

I realise that BUT it is in our nature to be funny and laugh at everything. I would say that Monty Python's Life of Brian is one of the funniest films ever, it is based on mocking Jesus. I don't understand why a cartoon of the prophet upsets (a not insignificant number of) Muslims and because of threats should not be drawn.
"Just be mindful of the tiny minority who will take things too far and want you dead. Even law abiding pensioners would lynch you if you were in a position of power and able to remove their health care needs."
So do you agree with their actions? Why should they be able to put fear in law abiding non-believers, it is not a good advert for a religion? It says to me that this is a very insecure religion.
Not sure what you mean about law abiding pensioners and health care needs - are you trying to give an analogy with what (say) a UK pensioner would do??

But mothers and wives are real people and usually not telling millions how to live their lives.
I feel passionate about Kraftwerk, The Fall, Manchester United, Lancashire Cricket Club, Metrolink Trams - I will defend them with words and reason. I will NOT threaten others with violence for mocking them, I will rebuff them with words, sarcasm and hopefully, wit.
The point isn't dumb...it is merely pointing out how insecure some religions are if they think that their all powerful prophet needs mere humans to defend them.

But it is an ancient book written by dessert dwelling nomads.

But they are not funny.
Boris Johnson or Donald Trump are funny, the car they drive in is not.

People take their beliefs seriously, and in Islam it's forbidden to mock and ridicule others. It's also forbidden to draw images of any person, and anything else with a face. Most Muslims give advice and don't go beyond that, and most people who have drawn the Prophet and openly slander him are alive and well. Ultimately, we believe they have to answer to GOD.

You imply that I do not take my beliefs seriously, I can assure you I do.
It may be forbidden within your religion to mock/draw or whatever, which is fine BUT that does not allow that belief system to impose those beliefs/customs/rituals on non-believers.
I'm very happy to answer to your god and I'll ask him why he/she is such a sensitive soul given that he is top gun..
