Five former presidents are currently alive. Trump is, Pence isn't yet, but when he is he won't be long. The eighth king will be one of the seven who once was president. Will Trump be the eight king?

Christ Jesus foretold in the book of Revelation, who the eight king is. But as it is people would rather do guess work.

I am Not sure what you mean by 'No one knew....' because students of the Bible knew and know the ' beast ' of Revelation 17:8 was the League of Nations being the beast that was and is not.....so what came after the ' beast that was ' is now the United Nations (8th king). I don't see that composite ' beast ' being one person just as the League of Nations was Not one person. I see No mention of a 'head wound' in the verses of Revelation 17:8-11.

I find those 42 months are the same as 3 1/2 years. - Revelation 13:5-8.
God's people have been harassed from a 'beast' as found in Daniel 7:23-25 in connection to Revelation 11:1-4.
During 'world wars' warring nations tore at one another just like wild beasts because they were taken in by the 'religion of nationalism ' (taught: die for country as if that is the same as dying for God).
Such bad pressure has always placed trials on Jesus' witness followers.

Since the existence was unknown in the 1st century, then how could the identification be known at that time.
Back in the 60's a teacher of mine even realized about the League and the U.N. so somehow he put that together.
As far as the dates, in Revelation 1:10 the setting for Revelation to take place is the Lord's Day or our time frame as per the rest of Scripture. So, Revelation was Not written for the first century but for our day or time frame.
That is why Daniel was told the words were sealed until our future time as per Daniel 12:4; Daniel 12:9.
We are Now at that ' end time of badness on Earth ' before Jesus, as Prince of Peace, will usher in global Peace on Earth among persons of goodwill.

I love it when I get to explain something in the Bible, that there are so many inaccurate explanations for these Scriptures. These Scriptures only fit together ONE way, so Please, at least think deeply about I say, because it is very important that anyone who wants to live in The Paradise Earth, understand. These daughters are all the different false religions on earth. This is shown by verses 3-6 Verse 10 says there are seven Kings, five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come.
Think carefully, remember this Beast has Seven heads with ten horns, verse 7. Now listen, each head stands for a Kingdom that had dealings with God’s chosen people, the Jews. These kingdoms were, Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Meads & Persions, Greece, that had fallen, one is, the sixth,Rome, Who was in power when John wrote Revelation. The seventh is the Anglo-American world power, the United States and Britain,that will rule for a short time. The Eighth King will be The Untied Nations, and notice how it is described in verse 8&11,12. Um, "seven hills" is a reference to Rome.
