So no one knew what revelation 17:9-11 meant for about two thousand years, right?

If you consider that even Daniel did Not know but was informed that what he wrote in chapter 12 would be ' sealed' until the time of the end. Meaning the end times of all badness on Earth as described in people's selfish behavior in 2 Timothy 3. So, to me Now is the time for the revealing of Revelation for us.

As with the rest of Scripture, Revelation has corresponding or parallel cross-reference verses showing what is meant.
True, Revelation is written in very-vivid word pictures for us, but that does Not mean we can't understand Revelation.

Um, "seven hills" is a reference to Rome.

I find KJV uses the words '7 mountains' at Revelation 17:9-10.
Rome was the 6th (Not the 7th) world power in Bible history.
Please note -> The succession of 7 world powers started with (1) Egypt, (2) Assyria, (3) Babylon, (4) Medo-Persia, (5) Greece, (6) Rome, and now down to our political day being the 7th.
So, Rome being a world power corresponds well with the words, ' five have fallen, one is...' so, one was due to come after Roman empire, and combined from the British empire comes us, - Anglo-American.

What has been will be again...
"The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."
-- Hermann Goering
...what has been done will be done again...
...there is nothing new under the sun.

If the 'powers that be' say people are being ' attacked ', so to speak, by the religious world, will the people do the bidding of the leaders _____

2 Timothy 3 New International Version (NIV)
3 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people

Nothing in 2 Timothy 3 that hasn't been seen before, right? It seems to me the litmus test being used today to determine if we are in the last days is that we think we have broken the seal on a book that we were told we can't break until the last day.

No, Rome is literally the city on 7 hills, was known as such in Biblical times, and clearly what the author was referring to

Is there an identifying mark of the false religion that fits the description in your explanation?

JoshuaTree,
There are several things said in Revelation, which can ONLY be false religion.
First, notice that Babylon the Great is the mother of harlots ant the abominations of the earth. What else could be explained in this way, and make sense? God hates false religion, the Bible even mentions that He is A Jealous God, wanting exclusive devotion, Exodus 34:14, 20:4-6.
Consider Revelation 17:1,2, where the Kingsof the earth commit fornication with Babylon the Great. The Kings of the earth are the top ranking men of each nation. Do they not always have some religious leaders praying for them when they meet?? This is because they really use each other, religion thinks that she is guiding the Beast she is riding on, while this Beast reallycares nothing for her, but uses her to help guide the people into whatever schemes that start. Most of us have heard that in times of war the preachers preach the cream of young manhood into the trenches. Fornication in the worst way.
Consider verses 6,7, where the Great Harlot s drunk with the blood of the Saints and Martyrs of Jesus. History has recorded that it is almost always False Religion who persecuted and murders true Christians, the Inquisitions especially.
Verse 18 is especially, if you really thing about what it really says. This Babylon the Great is like a great City, which Reigns over the Kings of the Earth. Think! What other group on earth could be compared to false religion, that could be said to Reign over The Kings of the Earth. She is riding this great seven headed , ten horned Wild Beast. The seven heads are the seven World rulers, down through time, Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Meads&Persions, Greece, Rome ant The Anglo-American world power, now in power. Remember false religion had an important place in all these World Powers. Nothing else has been riding on the back of all seven of these World powers, trying to guide them.
One othe distinguishing Mark is mentioned in the 18th chapter.
There seems to be only three different entities that rule the earth, Revelation 18:1-3 The Kings of the Earth- the top ranking men on earth, along with their armies, Revelation 19:19. Then there is Commerce, the commercial industry, making good and selling them all over the world. The other thing is Religion!! There are several thing mentioned in the 18th chapter that point to false religion, but the most important thing mentioned is at Revelation 18:23, and especially 24, where the Bible states that she in her was found the blood of prophets and Saints, and ALL that have been slain on earth. She is responsible because she did not teach God’s words, but worked with The Kings of the earth for her own position, riding on this Wild Beast, which pictures all the nations of earth. These descriptions cannot fit any other group, but false religion, The Great Harlot, Babylon the Great, and all her Harlot daughters, the hundreds of false religions on earth!!! Agape!!

Kangaroo Feathers,
You are right, Rome was called the City of Seven Hills, but that has nothing to do with the Prophecy recorded in Revelation 17. The seven heads of third Wild Beast represents seven different Kingdoms, starting with Egypt. They certainly did not all rule from those seven hills of Rome. In the Prophecy Rome was just one of these hills or mountains, the sixth one.
If you search geography you might fine another city in the world with seven hills, would that have anything to do with this great prophecy that John gave for our enlightenment of the Eschatological Times?

The point is that Rome was known as "the City of Seven Hills" at the time. If someone today wrote about "the Windy City", are they writing about Chicago, or any city that happens to be windy? If they wrote about "The Big Apple", are they writting about New York, or any city near an orchard?

Thank you, I am processing the information you provided and doing some further research. Interesting. Much of what you wrote hinges upon the identification of "false religion(s)". At the time Revelation was written Christianity didn't really exist as a "religion", Jesus was a Jew. What is the "true religion"?

JoshuaTree,
I know that you understand that it is difficult to tell someone, or explain to someone, something that takes Praecognita, meaning a person who knows a lot about what you are trying to explain. Many people just try to come up with anything that seems to contradict what you say. That is not the way to learn. I don’t pretend to know everything in the Holy Scriptures, but I know a lot, because I have lived by myself most of my life and I have read these Scriptures over and over, and compared what these Scriptures say to other Scriptures that speak about the same time period. I have prayed over and over for God to allow me to get a sense of the message,1Corinthians 2:10. I have made sure that what I say fits with what the Bible says in all other places. If something does not fit with all Scripture, there is a mistake. If you point to something that you think I am wrong about, I can explain why I said what I did.
In spite of the many, many explanations of Revelation, there is only ONE way everything fits together. If you just meditate on what I said, it might make sense to you.
Please ask me something else, and I will try to bring all these things together. I have studied the Holy Scriptures for over 50 years and I,over to find out something new. I have readmany explanations for Revelation 17th chapter. It takes me about one minute to realize they are wrong, because I know of other Scriptures that say something that does not fit their explanation. Agape!!

The 'seal', so to speak, is broken because now we travel with ease ' to-and-fro ' through the pages of Scripture as never before in history. A comprehensive concordance puts the Bible is alphabetical order for us so that we can be helped to study Scripture by subject or topic arrangement.
Plus, the ' opened seal ' of modern technology has made possible rapid Bible translation so that no matter where on Earth people live can have access to Scripture in their own mother tongue or native languages.

I find, true Jesus was a Jew, but once the temporary Constitution of the Mosaic Law ended as per Romans 10:4.
Then, at Pentecost the Christian congregation was established - Acts of the Apostles 11:26; 26:28; 1 Peter 4:16.

I find in the 23rd chapter of Matthew Jesus pronounced many ' woes with reasons why ' against those false religious leaders.
They were teaching customs or traditions of men over Scripture but taught as if being Scripture - Matthew 15:9.
So, what is 'out of harmony' with what Jesus taught is a religious-myth teaching even if taught as being Scripture.

I'll also ponder this tonight, thank you. My immediate thought regarding technology is ELS (Equidistance Letter Sequence) used for Bible Codes. If advances in technology were the key to the seal then wouldn't that invite us to put much faith in statements and predictions produced by the technology of bible codes?

Interesting question ^ above ^ and I find starting with Daniel 7:23 that the corresponding ' beast(s)' are beast-like kingdoms or governments. For example, chapter 8 mentions who is the figurative ' ram' and ' he-goat'- Daniel 8:20-21

Bible translation is based on the ancient manuscripts.
That is why the apocryphal books exclude themselves being out of harmony with the harmonious ' 66 ' Bible books.
Translation does Not mean some sort of codes just translation into native languages for local peoples.
That is why remote translation offices are set up, so that translating is done right there ' on the spot, so to speak.
