Columbus, I was also born in the 1950’s. My experience was totally different than yours, but frankly I think you are simply stating false narratives with a political agenda. I suppose things can be different, depending on what state you lived in, and I see you say you were in a Christian school, but as far as public school and what “I was taught in school”:
* Absolutely not true regarding blacks and what I was taught in school. In fact, I would say my entire life in school, the theme over and over again from the instructors was “white guilt” and never, absolutely never, were blacks demonized. We were taught, in a sympathetic manner to black civil rights, the civil rights movement, legislation involved, the various politicians at the time including by the way many Republicans who led the way in such legislation, the “Dixiecrats” (Southern Democrats) and their political agendas to hold down black citizens, et all. It was absolutely an effort exactly the opposite of what you say. I know you say you attended a Christian “school” – but honestly, I think you are imaging nonsense as part of your fixation on some agenda or you are an outright liar in all apology or deluded as part of the ceaseless effort by some to blame. Blacks were absolutely NOT “demonized” in any manner in my public school at any grade level.
As I progressed through school, it was very obvious the “liberal” and “Democratic Party” ideations of the instructors. One of the basic themes, constantly, is some sort of guilt trip that I am supposed to have because I am “white”. In fact, the “liberal” agenda, was – relentless. I will get to the “demons” presented to us in a theme oriented way by such instructors in a moment below.
The number one hero in my school(s) without question, constantly given as an example, was Cesar Chavez. After a relentless session of the greatness of Cesar Chavez, I recall going out to play soccer in the field and being attacked by a Mexican boy because of what I “did” regarding “grapes”. He came up from behind and started slugging me in my back. These same boy later would always smoke pot in the same field. This was in High School. We were also specifically instructed by our teachers not to buy grapes – to not go into a Safeway but rather “boycott grapes”. We would report back if we boycotted or not.
* As far as the communists, and crouching under “my desk”, we were given instruction of the dangers of nuclear war. I do not recall crouching under a desk, but I do recall a lot of assurances from various authorities that while the nuclear threat is very real, that every effort will be made to try and keep everyone safe. Yes, I have seen some old films showing children crouching under a desk, considering the reality of the time, perhaps it was the least to do. I do recall being told by a school instructor in the early 1960’s, that every 8 minutes either a US or Soviet high altitude plane is likely over one’s head that likely is armed with a nuclear device and that we should be told the truth. Today, in retrospect, perhaps that revelation was incorrect. But never was there anything even approximate to “brainwashing” demons.
Now also in regards to “crouching under the desk”, I do recall very clearly, again in Junior High School (now called “Middle School”), being shown a black and white film, made about 1950 or 51 or so, of “Duck and Cover” and something also showing some kid going under the desk – it was played to give instruction of just how bad the fear had become at one point. In other words, show to us to give an example of the confusion at the times, not to support the theme of the film. But I do recall, even though there was one that was a cartoon, and presented basically to be “laughed at” as to how “stupid” it was, the other didn’t seem too unreasonable and was simply describing what a nuclear bomb explosions looks like, the flash, the cloud, the danger of radiation.
This was also followed by pictures of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, and the horrible destruction, as well as the destruction caused by firebombing Germany.
* I was NEVER told anything about homosexuals in the public school until high school. Never, never was it demonization. In general, where it be heterosexual or homosexual, it wasn’t the trend to go into a lot of details. But I do recall in “Junior High” being forced to read out loud the basic, but pretty explicit, acts of heterosexual sex to everyone in class, and then without anything being explicit an acknowledgement of homosexuality. Again, homosexuals were NOT demonized, and in fact we were made to watch a movie which, I swear I cannot recall the title of, but it was a love story between a teenage male and teenage female in a tough area of NYC, but the focus and post discussion of this black and white film was not on these two characters per say, but rather on a friend of the teenage male who was a homosexual and the struggles he went through. We were given a very sympathetic viewpoint of homosexuality. Maybe your “Christian school” was different … but I am very suspect of these kind of narratives.
I will get to WHO I was often being told to “suspect” strongly (even demonized) in a minute, but let me note to Revoltingest, I do not recall EVER being given some formal “instruction”, certainly not in school, to demonized atheists. I am sure some Christian and other denominations may have given sermons, or stories, et all, demonizing atheists. But I do not recall any public school ever doing so, none, at all levels of my education from “Kindergarten” all the way through to my University.
The “Demons” presented in Public School:
* Very early, in elementary school, we were taught that “KKK” and “right wingers” wanted to kill President (xyz, Kennedy or whatever). There were groups such as the “Minutemen” with guns who needed to be arrested to save America.
* In an example of the “poetry” classes I was required to attend, I recall having to read poems out loud about “The Bomb”, which was basically portraying America as the “problem”. I recall the last words we were made to read outloud in such poems distinctly – the last word was “Zero”. Meaning we (America) set off the bomb and now the world has been destroyed.
* In later years, we were taught explicitly about how Hitler was killing homosexuals, this would be in the Junior High level.
* All of my public school instructors were ardent, obvious Democrats and there was no question, leftwing was the agenda. One constant theme was how I should feel guilty for the “destruction” of American Indians and their “way of life”. There was a constant theme that I am guilty of something. And of course, the endless teaching about “the slavery days”. Somehow, just being born Caucasian, I am guilty. I never had any slaves, however, and none of my ancestors.
* The “evil” of “monopolies” and the “rich industrialists”.
* Roosevelt was God.
* However, (John F.) Kennedy wanted tax cuts, and even he was attacked by these instructors, and we had to write a report in High School specifically about how JFK wanted tax cuts and how evil that was. That was another demon: “tax cuts”.
The “Demons” presented by social movements:
* Some, not all, hippies and others constantly were teaching me that all police are “pigs”.
* “White people” are demons.
* Black Panthers are heroes.
* Angela Davis is a civil rights leader.
et all…
The “Demons” today and in the near future:
- There is NO question in my mind WHO is being demonized today -
* Christians
* The police
* The South
* The Republicans
* The “rich”.
* Anyone who does not believe in “global warming”.
It is relentless, it is full of false narratives. In fact, so full of it that I am now convinced the left wing is mostly systematic liars and want violence as the end game. In my youth and education, there was without a question a leftwing agenda and “demons”. There were not the ones you describe.
I can go on. I am telling God’s truth in everything I said here.
